Keep Him Away From Me

Keeping Bergdahl front and center in the news may seem counter productive (why rub our nose in it) but since this administration views his release (and the price paid for it) as a smashing success, much like bagging OBL, I suspect we will see no end to the Bergdahl Reunion Tour, I smell a WH beer summit in the offing. But is putting him back on active duty really a smart thing?

Six weeks after being released from five years in Taliban captivity, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is expected to return to life as a regular Army soldier as early as Monday, Defense Department officials said late Sunday.

Sergeant Bergdahl has finished undergoing therapy and counseling at an Army hospital in San Antonio, and will assume a job at the Army North headquarters at the same base, Fort Sam Houston, the officials said.

He is also expected to meet with Maj. Gen. Kenneth R. Dahl, the officer who is investigating the circumstances of Sergeant Bergdahl’s disappearance from his outpost in Afghanistan in 2009.

Sergeant Bergdahl’s transfer from the therapy phase to a regular soldier’s job is part of his reintegration into Army life, officials said. He will live in barracks and have two other soldiers help him readjust.

Ya think, maybe, this new job of his might involve the handling of live weapons?

I think it is a terrible idea to put him in the general population among other soldiers, I would want to kick his ass.

Six weeks is plenty of time to interview him, interview all the pertinent personnel that were there, plenty of time to get a handle on what happened and to make a decision to either court marshal him and file desertions charges, or release him from military service. Either or as far as I’m concerned, if he did not desert, in which case he has suffered enough and warrants an early release, or he did, in which case his next stop should be a prison cell.

I know he deserves a presumption of innocence and should get a fair hearing, your typical soldier may not be as magnanimous. Given what facts I know now (probably incomplete, I admit) I would not want him anywhere near my platoon, keep him isolated and preferably off any military installation. Shit or get off the pot, but let’s put an end to this Bergdahl saga.
