A Saudi court jailed a Lebanese man for six years and sentenced him to 300 lashes after convicting him of encouraging a Saudi woman to convert to Christianity, Saudi dailies reported Sunday.
The same court sentenced a Saudi man convicted in the same case to two years in prison and 200 lashes for having helped the young woman flee the ultra-conservative, US-backed Sunni kingdom, local daily Al-Watan said.
The July 2012 case caused a stir in Saudi Arabia, which applies a strict version of Sharia that stipulates Muslims who convert to another religion must be sentenced to death.
The woman, known only as “the girl of Khobar,” was granted refuge in Sweden where she lives under the protection of unspecified NGOs, according to local press reports.
This is not out of left field. Not only does Saudi Arabia live under Sharia law, polls shows that a substantial number of Muslims support the death penalty for leaving Islam, ranging from 4% in Kazakhstan to majorities in Malaysia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine. (That comes from a rather alarming Pew report (PDF)).
One of the few legitimate points that Bill Maher has made is that we can not view all religious extremists as the same. No matter how extreme the Religious Right might or might not be, none of them are calling for the death penalty for leaving Christianity and very few even support Dominionism. Muslims in the US and Europe are far less likely to support such radical views. But where Islam has real power — the Middle East and central Asia — these views are common.
What do you think about folks banding together to boycott a manufacturer?
I have always believed that in the world of commerce, the profit motive is the bottom line, that past practices or loyalties are antiquated notions, and that, like a shark, if the a consumer product company is not moving forward, it will eventually die, being put out of business be a nimbler more innovative competitor. Now since the customer is always right, the goal is to get the most paying customers to buy your product, no sales/no business. But Lincoln was right, that you can’t please everyone all the time, so decisions have to be made concerning the best selling techniques (and who to pander to) in availing your products to the buyers.
Another truism is that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, some squeaky wheels are mouthing off about Lowe’s advertising on The American Muslim TV show:
The group that started this fire storm is Florida Family. On their website they list several other companies that decided to pull their advertising from the show, whether you think Lowe’s bowed to bigotry or made a conscious profit motivated judgment, you make the call.
Clearly this program is attempting to manipulate Americans into ignoring the threat of jihad and to influence them to believe that being concerned about the jihad threat would somehow victimize these nice people in this show.
Notice that the group has gotten 65 past advertisers and 25 of 27 new advertisers to either limit or remove their spots from the show.
I did a post several months ago about a woman who got all indignant because Target gave money to an organization that promotes business friendly candidates in Minnesota and one of those candidates held positions that she interpreted as anti gay, so she decided to make a big production out of buying a bunch of Target items, then refusing to pay for those items and cutting up her Target charge card in the process. I figure anyone for any reason can boycott any company they like, just spare us the whole production of your heroic stance. If I see a Capital One commercial with that goofball Alec Baldwin and I get my feathers all ruffled, if I want to go with someone else’s credit card, it’s a free country.
Lowe’s problem, it appears to me, was that it tried to unruffle the feathers by making a public statement about it, which usually results in pissing everyone off. All the other advertisers left it up to capitalistic whims of the free market ,”We decide which products we advertise and which TV shows we advertise on based on what we think will make us the most money. These are in house decisions, not offered for public debate”.
But instead of just letting market forces play out like they are suppose to, an elected official (yep, from California, my state sure does rock) thinks an official state resolution is needed:
A state senator from Southern California was considering calling for a boycott of Lowe’s stores after the home improvement chain pulled its advertising from a reality show about Muslim-Americans.
Calling the retail giant’s decision “un-American” and “naked religious bigotry,” Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, told The Associated Press on Sunday that he would also consider legislative action if Lowe’s doesn’t apologize to Muslims and reinstate its ads. The senator sent a letter outlining his complaints to Lowe’s Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Niblock.
Wait, another Democrat nanny stater who wants more regulations on the free market…………go on!!
What a good idea, let’s make companies advertise on shows that are PC and present a point of view that we agree with, regardles of the business angle, to wit, whether it is a wise (profit inducing) business decision. What a pinhead.
On it’s face, and with the requisite proviso that I have not watched this show, I would think that it would be a good idea, beneficial in promoting the notion that most Muslims are peaceful and that most American Muslims love their country as much as we do and want what is best for it. Great, we can appreciate that. But in no way do we turn a blind eye to the fact that Sharia in all it’s forms is Un American and the very antithesis of those American ideals that these American Muslims embrace. We have Westernized Muslims who still don’t get it, who can’t discard the craziness of their religion. Apostasy and blasphemy laws have no place in a civilized society.
We recently had some discussion on one of our other posts that veered into the topic of Islamic radicalization and the belief that it is all but a given that they will eventually takeover European natures, by democratic elections of all things, as they grow into the bigger population. Some of our resident Europeans assured us that this was all nonsense and blown out of proportion, something that made me wonder how much denial a person could live with considering I saw proof this problem first hand myself while visiting not one, but 6 different European countries. So when I was tipped off about this story, I figured it would be a nice introduction to the reality of the situation. Have a look:
Islamic extremists have launched a poster campaign across the UK proclaiming areas where Sharia law enforcement zones have been set up. Communities have been bombarded with the posters, which read: ‘You are entering a Sharia-controlled zone – Islamic rules enforced.’ The bright yellow messages daubed on bus stops and street lamps have already been seen across certain boroughs in London and order that in the ‘zone’ there should be ‘no gambling’, ‘no music or concerts’, ‘no porn or prostitution’, ‘no drugs or smoking’ and ‘no alcohol’.
Having experienced a similar attitude in Barcelona, Milan, Brussels, Paris, & London, where they have entire neighborhoods which the non-Islamic natives avoid out of real fear for their safety, if not lives, as well as seeing it directed in Rotterdam where I personally witnessed several of the followers of the Koran tell locals/natives outright that they where going to cut off their infidel heads, enslave their weak ass children, and use their women as chattel, sooner than later, I am absolutely not surprised by news like this. And this tense situation which existed both before 9-11, was far more pronounced during my recent visits, I add.
Of course, the Euro politicians and their cheerleaders will tell you this is not the case: there is no friction between the Islamic immigrants – brought there to do the work the Europeans didn’t want to do and then not really integrated and absorbed into the local society, thus resulting in radicalized and disenfranchised youths whom turn to Jihad as a means to extract revenge against the perceived injustice done to them – and the natives. It’s all bullshit. That story is repeated everywhere across Europe.
It is not a coincidence that we see a trend in elections in European country after European country, where what they consider to be more right wing parties – like that of Geert Wilders – see massive gains, while the socialist parties that pretend this is not going on, lose seats. The people that bear the brunt of the problem are reacting. Of course, most of the elite political class simply blames it on Islamophobia and the fact that those those experience the problem first hand and want it addressed, just are not inclusive enough. The victim is blamed basically. The sad part is then how those that point out the problem are of course labeled and attacked, because admitting there is a problem means admitting that multiculturalism sucks ass and is a failure, especially when it comes to Islamic immigrants and their disenfranchised and radicalized offspring, and that goes against over 5 decades of ingrained collectivist ideology about the greatness of multiculturalism.
But the truth is that multiculturalism has failed – the radicalized youth of Islamic immigrants don’t believe in it at all – and some of the biggest believers in and pushers of multiculturalism and the multicultural experiment are finally acknowledging it is not working well for them. Hopefully the change that the Dutch are making is real and not just paper to appease the public.
America too, albeit to a much lesser degree, will have to deal with this multiculturalism issue, the failures it has caused, sooner than later. The percentage of our population that worships Allah isn’t anywhere near that in Europe, many are converted natives, and most are far better integrated, but the fact remains that there are always those that feel like they are outsiders, precisely because they where told there was no need to change their identify to adopt any of the host country’s beliefs, and then isolated start holding a grudge. At least we don’t have neighborhoods that are as bad as what we hear or see is going on in Europe. Then again, I have not been to Detroit in 2 decades, and I hear that’s not that much fun anymore either, not just because the democrats that have owned have run it into the ground, but because some of the same problems with the worshippers of Allah seen in European cities are popping up.
I admit, the Obama apology tour has been a while, but the Cairo speech aftermath, that “New beginning” speech where he offered to close that chasm created by that other guy, has worn off rather dramatically. It seems now that some in the Muslim community hate him even more than Bush. How is that possible? The citizen of the world president was elected to heal, to make amends for decades of American imperialism and misdeeds, to prostate himself before Islam with an open heart. All that good will (and bowing) down the drain:
Far be it for me to label Obama a Muslim, he said he is not, and really, this is America and one’s faith is immaterial to one’s electability and their powers to lead. By some of those “religion of peace” folks don’t continence anyone leaving the faith. Sadly, Sharia is very clear about what should be done with apostates, even those that aren’t really apostates but you think they are anyway.
Technically, we should just chalk this up to incoherent ramblings from a lunatic, and aren’t all these jihadist/ death to apostates/ Osama was just one swell dude/ my, but my beard itches/ I’m now in the mood to beat my wife (wives) really all crazy anyway?
If this imam dude was a 13 year old kid living in Tacoma, he would of already been yanked out dynamite vest making class, man would his mom be pissed.
Settle down boys, in 2012 you will have another president to hate, but let’s cut Obama some slack, he does mean well, and he is one your side with that pesky Israel problem.
