Can You Say Swift Boating?

It is no secret that the terror warrior in chief will trot out the head of OBL and parade it around for effect during the re election season, and who can blame him? This is a huge feather in his cap, and with the misery index, the unemployment rate, poverty level, debt, and inflated living expenses all stacked against him (that Damn Bush) success stories will be at a premium. But really, wasn’t it Valerie Jarrett who actually got OBL?

President Obama canceled the operation to kill Osama bin Laden three times before saying yes, because he got cold feet about the possible political harm to himself if the mission failed. Instead of listening to advisors from the U.S. military, Defense, or even State, Obama was acting on the advice of White House politico and close friend Valerie Jarrett. Valerie Jarrett?

I guess the point is simply that it does not matter who kicked him in the ass and got him to green light the mission, OBL was gotten, and good riddance. But much like the 527 organization called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth who tried to set the record straight wrt Kerry and his chest thumping promotion of his heroism under fire, some ex special forces dudes are peeing in Obama’s cornflakes:

A group of former U.S. intelligence and Special Forces operatives is set to launch a media campaign, including TV ads, that scolds President Barack Obama for taking credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden and argues that high-level leaks are endangering American lives.

“Mr. President, you did not kill Osama bin Laden, America did. The work that the American military has done killed Osama bin Laden. You did not,” Ben Smith, identified as a Navy SEAL, says in the film.

“As a citizen, it is my civic duty to tell the president to stop leaking information to the enemy,” Smith continues. “It will get Americans killed.”

Personally I think this move will get even less traction then the swift boaters. If I was part of this group or in a position of influence, I would tell them to ditch the OLB angle and just hammer the president for his leaks.

There is much to criticize the president over in the international arena, and leaks that put American lives at risk should be pointed to. But if the OBL raid did go south and turned into another Operation Eagle Claw, it would have tarred Obama just like with Carter. Whether he was the prime motivator, or a reluctant participant dragged to the table and shamed in to action, by authorizing the mission, he essentially owned it, and knew the credit or the blame would go his way.

If ex veterans want to call attention to the plight of wounded warriors, to substandard medical care, to insufficient funding of our military, even for the careless nature in which terrorists are released from Gitmo, only to re enter the battlefield and kill Americans, their service gives them a ready made podium. but Obama did get OBL, the circumstances behind it take a back seat to the act itself.
