A US soldier in Afghanistan has shot dead 15 civilians and wounded others after entering their homes in Kandahar province, Afghan and Nato sources say.
He reportedly left his base early in the morning to attack village homes. Nine children are among the dead.
Hold on to your hats. Afghanistan is really going to explode now.
It won’t matter in the long run, but I’ll note in anyway: in a decade of violent conflict, in which the distinction between friend and foe has been murky, this is the first time something like this has happened. Such incidents would have been routine for almost any other army in the world. And it is only Western nations that would and will hold a soldier accountable for this horrific act. Under the Taliban and under the rule likely to be in place after we leave, this kind of massacre is routine. The difference is that it will be their own countrymen committing murder, not foreigners. And it seems like the Afghans are OK with that.
