Don’t Touch That Horse

You know, I give up. The people in this Administration are just fucking stupid:

A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

It would also replace the FFA’s and 4-H’s programs with a government program. Last year, I went to a fair in central Pennsylvania where livestock were displayed and sold. I was very impressed by the young kids who were able to manage, raise and sell animals. If I understand this regulation correctly, that would stop. And so would some of the charm of the fair.

I could get deep into how deeply stupid this is or how this is not some modern version of child slavery but that’s playing Hilda Solis’ game. The underlying principle is that what children do on the farms is not the government’s fucking business. It’s certainly not the business of the Feds. And even it were, it would be the business of the Department of Agriculture, where there’s a reasonable chance the bureaucrats and the secretary have seen an actual cow or at least know what one looks like.

Maybe there is some thought behind this, but it sounds an awful lot like some city slicker suddenly found out that — heavens to besty! — some kids in rural areas have chores and do work.

LSM misses the real issue here

It seems that US News ran an article on Hilda Solis, President Obama’s Labor secretary – another one of those unelected Czar jobs – buying a Canadian car:

To show her support for American workers, President Obama’s labor secretary, Hilda Solis, has junked the standard black limo and purchased a new Chevrolet Equinox to ride around Washington in. The problem: the crossover SUV is built and assembled in Canada from parts also made in Canada.

Solis proudly arrived at a media breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor today in the shiny silver vehicle, which she has dubbed the “bullet.” She was asked about why she traded the standard-issue limo for the SUV. “What better example could I set if I encouraged my staff to go and purchase and seek how we could acquire a vehicle that would for me would send a signal that we’re for supporting our American workers, American-made products, fuel efficient as well,” she told the Monitor’s Dave Cook, who provided this video of her answer.

Solis added that she was inspired to buy the Chevy because of the pride she saw in American auto workers during trips to U.S. car and truck plants. She said that she was wowed by “the pride that they take making our automobiles here in America.”

What they all failed to realize and point out in this article, which stands out to me, is that like all of Team Obama, Hilda Solis seems to have no clue about how things work in the real world and the foggiest about any kind of economics, and yet, here she is in charge of driving economic changes in the real world. Their defense when presented with the facts?

When Whispers notified her office that her “American-made” car was actually Canadian, Labor spokesman Carl Fillichio said, “Modern automobile manufacturing is a global industry and General Motors is a company whose reach extends far beyond the boundaries of the United States. Cars assembled here in the U.S. are made from globally sourced parts, just as cars assembled in other countries utilize parts made in America. Not only is the Equinox the second fastest selling SUV in America—a good sign for the overall health of the U.S. auto industry—66 percent of its parts were made in America. That’s up from about 50 percent just a few years ago.”

So WTF makes what GM is doing with their cars any different from say a Honda or BMW assembled in the US? Are those car manufacturers not part of that “global industry” as well? Are US workers putting them together not part of the modern automobile manufacturing capability? I’ll tell you what makes the difference here: Obama bought GM, which was going broke, to pay off the unions that helped elect him. With tax payer money to boot. Hence this stupid show.

My wife owned an Equinox. It was a decent car and I liked it. Had it for 5 years. Was still running good but my wife wanted something new because it was paid off. We looked at the new Equinox, and she was not too impressed with it. I hated the idea of spending my money to help Team Obama out. So this year we got her a Ford instead of another Government Motors car.

Anyway, back to the major lesson here. These morons without a clue of how things are in the real world and apparently seriously lacking in economic know-how, are the ones making the economic decisions for the country. It’s not by accident that things are looking down and not up.
