The Hill has a piece dealing with how democrats are now panicking about the Jewish vote with the 2012 election right around the corner, based on how a handpicked Orthodox Jewish candidate ended up losing in a deep blue predominantly Jewish district that has consistently & predictably voted democrat for 9 straight decades. Now, I could focus on the fact that the Jewish voter is finally wising up to Obama, but I was far more interested on Waxman’s quote, and specifically the bolded section:
Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), a prominent Jewish congressman, said the Jewish vote is a concern for his party.
“I think Jewish voters will be Democratic and be for Obama in 2012, especially if you get a Republican candidate like [Texas] Gov. [Rick] Perry,” he said. “But there’s no question the Jewish community is much more bipartisan than it has been in previous years. There are Jews who are trending toward the Republican Party, some of it because of their misunderstanding of Obama’s policies in the Middle East, and some of it, quite frankly, for economic reasons. They feel they want to protect their wealth, which is why a lot of well-off voters vote for Republicans.”
Waxman was basically trying to make the point that these “misinformed” or “greedy” Jews voted for a republican, because they where, well not bright enough to understand Obama’s nuanced approach to Israel and/or greedy and didn’t want to support Obama’s wealth redistribution agenda, which these days actually far more resembles a wealth destruction agenda. It’s basically disgusting. A low blow impugning both their intelligence – by bandying the ridiculous line that they have somehow been bamboozled by others instead of coming to the conclusion based on the facts that Obama is hostile to Israel – and far worse, an attack on their character, for daring to leave the damned plantation and not to simply ponying up to the money government believes is theirs, all wrapped in one.
However, I think Waxman, inadvertently, got half of that right. I firmly believe that the Jews he maligns, like most Americans with or without wealth, are simply and desperately trying to protect whatever they have left, after the destructive policies of the last 3 years. He may want to paint it as greed on their part – that class warfare nonsense that’s always bandied by the regressives when they want to shut up people pointing out they are being fleeced – but it is obviously more like a desperate reaction to prevent the horrible economic situation the policies of the last 3 years have created from continuing to drain them economically.
And it will not be just Jewish people, rich or poor, which will be voting with that as their primary concern in 2012. At the risk of being called an ass for this “I told you so” moment, I want to point out that I predicted this would happen, sooner than later, when the progressives where all up in everyone’s face after the 2008 victory and proclaiming the death of conservatism and the rise of the 1000 year progressive reich. Even in my wildest dreams however, I couldn’t believe the left would be that inept and destructive and that fast. No wonder James Carville is telling democrats that they need to panic, and do so yesterday.
