Please let them kill it already!

The “them” I am talking about is congress, and the “it” is the ludicrous ethanol mandate that was foisted on us by the evil progressive green movement to make tax payers enrich a bunch of them in return for a royal shafting. AP reports that the ethanol and green lobby are storming D.C. to buy off enough politicians to keep ripping of tax payers and anyone that buys gas so some liberals can make big money:

WASHINGTON, April 10 (Reuters) – U.S. ethanol producers are taking their case for protecting the nation’s biofuel mandate directly to lawmakers this week, as the latest Congressional push to revamp federal renewable fuel targets kicks off on Wednesday.

Growth Energy, a pro-ethanol trade group, said producers from Illinois, Colorado, Iowa and other Midwestern states would meet with their representatives in Congress to parry what they called a “desperate” attempt by oil companies to stamp out renewable fuel use.

They plan to reiterate to lawmakers their arguments that the ethanol mandate has helped to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

The only thing the ethanol mandate helped reduce is the available corn on the market that could be used for cattle feed or human consumption and the energy efficiency of the gas tainted by this crappy product. Consequently, we now are looking at higher prices for anything coming from, containing, or eating corn, and are wasting more gas because the efficiency of ethanol tainted gas sucks. But, the connected members that receive support from progressive green movement to institute these sorts of tax payer screwing schemes and scams, was making a killing form this ludicrous idea, and they are not giving up that lucrative scam without a fight it seems.

Congress better end this dumb thing, and do so now rather than later. There is also a lesson here: practically every one of these fuel additives has been horrible failure. From MTBE to ethanol, all they did is enrich special interests while screwing the consumer and even the environment. Stop the stupid and keep gas clean and less expensive. We need to make enough CO2 to keep the coming ice age at bay anyway.

The Green Fleet

On Monday, the U.S. Navy will officially announce the ships for its demonstration of the “Great Green Fleet” — an entire aircraft carrier strike group powered by biofuels and other eco-friendly energy sources. If a powerful congressional panel has its way, it could be the last time the Navy ever uses biofuels to run its ships and jets.

In its report on next year’s Pentagon budget, the House Armed Services Committee banned the Defense Department from making or buying an alternative fuel that costs more than a “traditional fossil fuel.” It’s a standard that may be almost impossible to meet, energy experts believe; there’s almost no way the tiny, experimental biofuel industry can hope to compete on price with the massive, century-old fossil fuels business.

The greens are up in arms about this but the shouldn’t be. Biofuels cost anywhere from four to ten times as much as fossil fuels. And as I keep saying, price communicates information. In this case, the information that biofuels are inefficient, dirty and environmentally unsound (read Rolling Stone’s article on ethanol here). Moreover, many of the fuels they are using — such as waste grease — are unlikely to be sustainable on a large scales.

There is one thing to complain about: the bill removes the restrictions on alternative fuels that pollute more than traditional fuels, which could open up the dirty methods like Fischer-Tropsch (which Wired, in a remarkable display of journalistic objectivity, reminds us was used by Nazi Germany and Apartheid South Africa).

But biofuels are simply not ready for prime time. This isn’t “stimulating” an industry to develop. This is corporate welfare designed to prop up dirty inefficiency fuels that can not compete with fossil fuels — let alone nuclear — in efficiency, price or environmental impact.

There are some energy efficiencies the military is finding — using solar power in Aghanistan or software that runs ships more efficiently. But this is simply playing politics and wasting money. End it.
