Flagging Fools

Years ago Jim Croce had a not so bad song with lyrics of:

You don’t tug on Superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don’t mess around with Jim, da do da do…

Let’s add one more, no matter how dumb/drunk/cottled/young you are, you don’t go to your local VFW hall and burn their flag, what a goofball:

A few facts on this incident reveals much. This Obama voter (Yes, I’m guessing here, but it is a good guess) thought he was special (that is what the public schools are teaching our kids today) that rules really don’t apply to them, and when rebuffed or refused, to not take any of the blame but go out and retaliate, even to the point of absurdity. It also reveals much about the conservatives (guessing again) that were in that hall at the time. The flag meant something to them as a symbol, retribution must be met/justice must be served, and when penance was made the boy was forgiven and given his life back as it was and his anonymity was preserved.

For those unaware of what a VFW hall is, it’s like a Elk’s Lodge, only populated by military vets, vets who’s instinctual reaction to flag burning would be to punch your ticket right there on the spot.

I was a bit concerned when the video related that the burner was hunted down and two days later was caught and given the ultimatum, but he did volunteer for flag pole duty (how much persuasion and to what extent bodily harm was threatened, we will never know), but I like when the punishment fits the crime, and this one fits perfectly. I would also expect the burner to pay for the replacement flag.

The vet talked about the old flag as being retired, much ceremony and procedure goes into even this part of flag etiquette.

Hopefully, the young lad learned a valuable lesson. OWS folks in Oakland or Berkeley, or maybe NYC can get away with stuff like this, impetuous youth and all that, but going this route in fly over states, and at VFW halls is akin to pulling on Superman’s cape, you are just asking for it.
