Race vs. Rice
by Lee

I just had a thought.  Let’s assume that the conventional wisdom holds true, and Condi Rice ends up facing Hillary Clinton in the 2008 presidential race.  Actually, for the sake of this point, it could be Condi versus any white Democrat.  If Condi happens to lose, it will most likely be because blacks did not vote for her, and if that comes to pass the issue of racism in America is dead, forever.  Why?  Because it will show that black Americans are more concerned with liberal ideology than they are about race-based policies.

The day that blacks vote for a white candidate over a black one they lose all right to claim widespread racial discrimination.  They can’t claim, ever again, that there is some kind of widespread racial conspiracy that keeps black candidates out of office.  (How many times during the last election cycle was the point made that Barak Obama is the only black Senator?  How many times were we told that when JC Watts retired there were no black Republicans left in the House?) If ideology matters more to black America than racial lines, then they have shown that they care more about their agenda than they do seeing “one of their own” in office.

A Condi nomination for president will be a watershed moment for race relations in this country.  Because, at the end of the campaign, we’re either going to end up with our first black president, or blacks will overwhelmingly vote for a white candidate over a black one.  Either way, things are going to change forever.
