Kwasniewski: Bush acted like a true Texan gentleman

Jest to przykre, że senator z 20-letnim stażem nie zauważa polskiego wkładu. To jest niemoralne - powiedział w wywiadzie dla “Faktów” prezydent Aleksander Kwaśniewski, komentując prezydencką debatę w USA.

It is unfortunate that a senator with 20-year experience doesn’t notice Polish investment.  It’s immoral – said in an interview with “Facts” president Aleksander Kwasniewski, commenting on the presidential debate in the USA.

“To, że senator z 20-letnim stażem nie docenia polskiego poświęcenia, to jest przykre” - tak prezydent Aleksander Kwaśniewski skomentował fragment debaty telewizyjnej George’a Busha z Johnem Kerrym, podczas której kandydat Demokratów nie zauważył obecności Polski w koalicji walczącej z terroryzmem.

“I’m sorry that a senator with a 20-year experience doesn’t appreciate Polish sacrifice.” – so commented president Aleksander Kwasniewski the part of the televised debate between George Bush and John Kerry, during which the Democratic candidate didn’t notice the presence of Poland in the coalition fighting with terrorism.

Prezydent dodał jednak, że trzeba wziąć pod uwagę, iż jest to kampania wyborcza.

President added however that it is understandable during a presidential campaign.

“Nie sądzę, żeby była to niewiedza - podkreślił prezydent w Faktach TVN. - Jedno trzeba powiedzieć jasno: ta koalicja to przecież nie tylko Stany Zjednoczone, Wielka Brytania, Australia, ale to jest także udział żołnierzy polskich, ukraińskich, bułgarskich i hiszpańskich, którzy zginęli. Jest czymś niemoralnym nie widzieć tego zaangażowania, które podjęliśmy w przekonaniu, że trzeba wspólnie walczyć z terroryzmem, że trzeba wykazać międzynarodową solidarność, że Saddam Husajn jest niebezpieczną postacią dla świata”.

“I don’t think it was ignorance – underlined president in Facts TVN. – One thing should be said clearly: this coalition is not just The United States, Great Britain, and Australia, but also participation of troops from Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Spain, who have died.  It’s immoral not to notice this engagement, which we undertook convinced that we must fight together with terrorism and that we must show international solidarity, and that Saddam Hussein presented a danger for the world.”

“W tym sensie - dodał Kwaśniewski - można mówić o naszym rozczarowaniu; że ta postawa i ta ofiara tych żołnierzy jest aż tak bardzo marginalizowana. Ale ja to wszystko składam na karb kampanii wyborczej i pewnego przesłania, które może nie było wyrażone przez senatora Kerry’ego wprost - że on bardziej myśli o koalicji, która lokowałaby USA wraz z Francją z Niemcami. Czyli z tymi, którzy w sprawach irackich powiedzieli »nie«.”

“In this respect – added Kwasniewski – we can say we are disappointed that our stance and the sacrifice of those soldiers are so marginalized.  But I blame this on the electoral campaign and a certain message, which may not have been expressed by senator Kerry directly – that he thinks higher of a coalition that would include France and Germany together with the USA.  Thus including those who said »no« to the Iraqi matters.”

“Prezydent Bush zachował się jak prawdziwy teksański dżentelmen - walczył o to, by docenić udział innych państw w tej koalicji” - podkreślił Kwaśniewski.

“President Bush acted like a true Texan gentleman – fighting to acknowledge (appreciate) the involvement of other countries in the coalition” – underlined Kwasniewski.

Prezydent uchylił się od odpowiedzi na pytanie, z którym z kandydatów w amerykańskich wyborach sympatyzuje.

President declined to answer with which candidate in this American election he sympathizes.

“Ja po prostu patrzę na to, co się dzieje, i zachowuję należyty szacunek dla demokracji amerykańskiej. Wierzę, że kto nie byłby prezydentem Stanów Zjednoczonych, w kwestiach zarówno irackich, jak i polsko- amerykańskich, będzie zachowywał się odpowiedzialnie” - podkreślił.

“I simply observe what’s happening and maintain all due respect for the American democracy.  I believe that whoever becomes the next American president will behave responsibly with respect to the Iraqi and the Polish-American matters” – he underlined.

Podczas czwartkowej debaty Bush - Kerry dwa razy Polska została wymieniona jako przykład sojusznika USA. Po wypowiedziach Kerry’ego o antyirackiej koalicji, która miała sprowadzać się wyłącznie do Stanów Zjednoczonych i być może jeszcze Wielkiej Brytanii czy Australii, Bush zareagował, że nie wolno tak traktować sojuszników amerykańskich, w tym Polski.

During the Thursday debate between Bush and Kerry, Poland was mentioned twice as an example of an ally of the USA.  After a statement from Kerry asserted that the anti Iraqi coalition includes only the United States, and maybe Great Britain or Australia, Bush reacted by saying that one must not treat American allies, including Poland, this way.

Natomiast gdy była mowa o przywódcach sojuszników USA, Kerry wymienił premiera Wielkiej Brytanii Tony’ego Blaira. Wówczas Bush zapytał: “A dlaczego nie wymieniasz Kwaśniewskiego?”.

When the discussion touched on the leaders of American allies, Kerry listed only the premier of Great Britain, Tony Blair.  In that moment, Bush asked: “Why don’t you mention Kwasniewski?”

W trakcie debaty Bush dwukrotnie napominał Kerry’ego, że lekceważy Polaków jako koalicjantów.

During the debate, Bush twice noted that Kerry belittled Poles as members of the collation.

“Mój przeciwnik powiada, że nie mamy sojuszników w Iraku. A co z Tony’m Blairem? Co z prezydentem Polski, Aleksandrem Kwaśniewskim?” - argumentował Bush.

“My opponent says that we don’t have allies in Iraq.  What about Tony Blair?  What about the president of Poland, Aleksander Kwasniewski?” – argued Bush.

W odpowiedzi Kerry podkreślił, iż nie istnieje nic takiego jak “wielka koalicja” w Iraku i Stany Zjednoczone winny “od nowa zbudować swoje sojusze”.

Answering, Kerry underlined that there is no such thing as “big coalition” in Iraq and the United States should “start rebuilding our alliances.”

Kandydat na prezydenta USA John Kerry zapomina, że koalicja w Iraku jest bardzo szeroka - powiedział w Krakowie premier Marek Belka, komentując pierwszą debatę kandydatów na prezydenta USA George’a W. Busha i Johna Kerry’ego i pojawiające się w niej wątki polskie.

The candidate for president of the USA, John Kerry forgets that the coalition in Iraq is very broad – said in Krakow premier Marek Belka, commenting on the first debate between candidates for president of the USA, George W. Bush and John Kerry, and its Polish aspects.

“John Kerry, atakując prezydenta Busha, podkreśla, że jego wysiłki w stworzeniu koalicji w wojnie z terroryzmem są ograniczone, i zapomina, że obok wojsk amerykańskich w Iraku są Brytyjczycy, Australijczycy, Polacy, a poza tym jest chyba ok. 30 krajów, które wysłały wojska w celach stabilizacyjnych, a więc na pewno jest to bardzo szeroka koalicja” - powiedział premier dziennikarzom.

“By attacking President Bush, John Kerry underlines that his efforts in building the coalition in the war against terrorism are limited and forgets that next to the American troops in Iraq are the British, the Australians, Poles, and also around 30 other countries that sent troops for stabilizing purposes so it is surely very broad coalition” – said the premier.

Dodał jednak, że należy odróżnić rzeczywiste intencje od walki i temperatury wyborczej, która w Stanach Zjednoczonych wcale nie jest niższa niż w Polsce.

He added however that one has to differentiate actual intentions from the electoral fight and temperature, which in the United States is not lower than in Poland.

“Traktujmy to z dystansem. W kampanii wyborczej padają różne słowa, które niekoniecznie trzeba rozumieć dosłownie” - zauważył.

“Let’s treat it from a distance.  In an electoral campaign, many words are said that not necessarily should be interpreted verbatim” – he noted.
