Right Thinking From The Left Coast
The Government is merely a servant -- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them. - Mark Twain

Habemus Papam
by Lee

White smoke has just been seen over the Vatican, indicating a new Pope has been elected.  Stay tuned…

Update: It’s Ratzinger.  Any liberal American or European Catholics who had hoped for a more liberal stance on abortion or gay marriage or women priests just got told to go suck the big one.

Update 2: I think the Cardinals were hedging their bets with this selection.  John Paul II was a very popular Pope, but also a very conroversial one.  By choosing his right hand man to succeed him they have chosen to continue with JP2’s policies.  However, Ratzinger is 78 years old.  If the call for reform grows loud, the new Pope isn’t going to be around for more than 10 years or so, and then they can elect a younger reformer.
