Right Thinking From The Left Coast
"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"

Double Secret Probation

Phil Bredesen has apparently decided to play Dean Wormer.

Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen signed a measure last week requiring state-funded colleges and universities to notify parents any time their kid violates a school’s alcohol or drug policy.

It seems that Bredesen and crew are banking on changes made in federal rules after the Virginia Tech shootings. The Department of Education modified the language in an effort to balance “safety, privacy, and treatment.”

In other words, under the guise of keeping students safe, Tennessee lawmakers are forcing state schools to send home behavioral report cards for any kid under the age of 21, whether parents want to know or not.

”Ladies and gentlemen, I’ll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did. [winks at Dean Wormer] But you can’t hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn’t this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but I for one am not going to stand here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!”

Update by Lee: President Bush is giving a press conference.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’ll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our detainees - we did. [winks at Cheney] But you can’t hold a whole military responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole military system? And if the whole military system is guilty, then isn’t this an indictment of our governmental institutions in general? I put it to you, the American people—isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can accuse us of whatever you like, but I for one am not going to stand here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Thank you, and praise Jesus.”
