Why Not Speak?

Morrissey has the series of youtubes of Palin’s interview on CNN earlier this year.  It’s somewhat dry, actually.  But I’m impressed by the way she handles the questions.  This is no empty-headed beauty queen; she’s a sharp well-prepared woman.

So why not turn her loose on the media?  Why hasn’t there been a Q&A session?  I repeat what I said last night.  I worry that she’s being trained to talk in safe sound bites.  If so, we’ll know the first time she handles a question.  And if so, it’s a pity.  She’s good on her feet.

Update:Yeah, um, please don’t respond to that last sentence with the obvious joke.

I suspect she’s getting 8-10 hours/day of policy instruction. No matter how smart she is (and she seems to be very smart), she’s not going to be up to speed right away on national issues, and turning her loose too soon is a recipe for disaster. It’d be better to delay it a week or two and have her come out with a solid interview than to watch her struggle too early.

She has her Charlie Gibson interview this week, and then I suspect you’ll see a lot more of her doing that kind of Q&A;. Everyone’s going to remember the first interview, and if she nails it, she’ll gain more prestige. If she blows it (which I think she definitely would have two weeks ago), that’s what people will remember.

I’d agree with Mark.  The McCain campaign isn’t stupid enough to try and force her into their soundbites, so much as provide a comprehensive education on policy and let her deliver her ideas and opinions in her own style.

Obama made the spectacularly stupid comment today that McCain / Palin are lying about being mavericks. McCain nearly defects and pics a disasterous Lieberman. He did defect and author that amnesty bill with Kennedy. McCain shoved the surge idea on Bush. etc. People don’t forget that high profile stuff.

The minute or so of Obama I saw on MSNBC and Fox were horrible. The guy, um, ah, kind of searches for, uh, words. Then makes an ass out of himself.

I’ve noticed this too. When he goes off the teleprompter, he sometimes gets completely lost and almost starts to sound like George Bush. The main difference is that Bush speaks slow and says “uhhhhhhhhhhh” while Obama speaks fast and says “uh uh uh uh uh uh uh”.

(Plus, of course, Bush sounds like that even when he IS reading off the teleprompter… :-) )
