Right Thinking From The Left Coast
"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"
-- Chief Justice John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 1803

Why He Should Worry

There is much to like and admire about John McCain, but in this most unusual race experience may simply not be enough:

Obama is going to be the nominee, barring some major development. His charisma, youth, and energy is going to be hard to run against, especially with a public tired of eight years of a Republican president, tired of a war with no end in sight, and worried about their ability to make ends meet. McCain’s only real advantage will also be his greatest liability: His decades of experience/he’s older than the hills.

There are other factors to consider-not the least of which is what might happen if social conservatives stay home or the potential impact of Bob Barr. If the race turns into a generational battle a la Bush I versus Clinton I, then McCain could lose. He needs to tread carefully here to keep the independents who might also vote for Obama without alienating still-skeptical conservatives.

He’s also a Cylon, but apparently one of the good ones....

Seriously though, Obama is going to be pretty easy for the GOP to chew up and spit out.  The guy has some huge skeletons in his closet, and his extreme left voting record is going to be trotted out and dissected like nobody’s business, and then there are his public statements that essentially endorse Marxism.

Finally, never underestimate the DNC’s ability to blow a presidential election....

While I agree with all of this, isn’t the larger issue turning out the vote? A lot of the GOP doesn’t like McCain, and while I don’t buy the “vote for the other side” logic people make, isn’t there a strong possibility of people staying home, while the Dems rally up the vote?

Or is your thinking that stirring up Obama’s closet will be motivate enough of those people to get over their issues with McCain and vote to defeat Obama?

Seems to me that McCain’s choice of VP could have a significant impact too.

Finally, never underestimate the DNC’s ability to blow a presidential election....

Pretty astonishing, isn’t it? They should write a “how to not win a campaign” textbook or something. I’ve been truly amazed at their ability to screw things up in the last few elections.

I don’t like McCain at all - I think he’s a loose cannon and half the time he doesn’t know what the fuck he is doing or talking about.

Still not voting for Obama or the Hillary....

The narrative that McCain’s age is a fatal flaw against Obama’s youth is not likely to pan out.  While the contrast between Obama and McCain is sharp, I think McCain will have the experience and depth to prevail in a very long campaign season.

I don’t think McCain’s VP pick will mean much at all, Bush chose Chaney and this country certainly become more conservative in the last 7.5 years.

And as much a libitarians want to stamp their little feet and teach the mean ole GOP a lesson, I’d like to point out 4 little things…
Ginsburg
Stevens
Souter
Breyer
And for at least two of them it’s only sheer fucking will power that’s keeping them above ground until November.
