White Trash Like Me

Toby Keith goes there.

Now, Keith has trained his sights on Barack Obama, attacking him in racially tinged language that startled even the notoriously reactionary radio jock Glenn Beck. During Keith’s appearance on the July 30 broadcast of Beck’s show, he remarked, “I think the black people would say he [Obama] don’t talk, act or carry himself as a black person.”

“What does that even mean?” the audibly shocked Beck replied.

“Well, I don’t know what that means,” Keith drawled, “but I think that that’s what they would say. Even though the black society would pull for him I still think that they think in the back of their mind that the only reason he is in [the general election] is because he talks, acts and carries himself as a Caucasian.”

Will white liberals ever get over this self-righteous bigotry that says African-Americans have to behave a certain way? Does Toby Keith really think that if Obama acted like another Jesse Jackson that the country would still take him seriously? More importantly, should Obama even care about what Toby Keith thinks? I don’t think so, and I don’t think he will, either.

Toby Keith is a white liberal?

Posted by West Virginia Rebel on 08/05/08 at 04:36 PM from United States

dwex: He’s described himself as a Democrat.

Posted by HARLEY on 08/05/08 at 04:37 PM from United States

yep.
his interview with Dan Rather made that clear. he described himself as a yellow dog democrat.
opposed the Iraq war, even though he did a few tours to entertain the troops.

Holy crap. This is the guy who got into it with the Dixie Chicks over their Dubya comment. WTF is up with that?

He could have put it better, but I don’t disagree with him.  I’m sure Chris Rock can get away with saying it…

I’m a liberal and I don’t want him.  Nor do I believe that he is a liberal.  If so, he’s the largest sellout ever, catering his entire act to red-staters and flag-wavers.  I would like to know where nationalistic racists fit into the Democratic party.  I’m not saying *closet* racism or white guilt, but the overt, ignorant type that is displayed in his comments above.  The Democrats at least have the decency to hide their racism.  Comments like his are typically from the Republican camps.

I hear ya, Harley.  You missed my point, though.  Democrats are careful to come off as harmonious integrationalists, hiding any latent racism that they may have.  Comments such as Tobys are typical of the Republicans and their “don’t give a shit” attitude.  Seriously, he doesn’t sound like a Democrat.  And his “boot in your ass” song is about as Republican as you can get.  I watched him perform in in Houston, Texas, and the reaction was exactly what I’m sure he was expecting.

Something tells me Keith isn’t exactly an intellectual.

Methinks you’re right.

If he’s a liberal, Paris Hilton is a neurosurgeon.

you know that was a song, and it was directed at terrorists, not Hussian. Republicans and Democrats are united agisnt the Talaban/al quadia right? If so there there is nothing republican about that song, unless you want it to be.
So Toby is a bit of a biot, or maybe he just understand Obama, dosn’t surprise me any, after all hes a Okie.

If he’s a liberal, Paris Hilton is a neurosurgeon.

He was fawning over Dan Rather like he was a mentor.

Liberals don’t write songs like that.  That’s why “Team America” has that “America, Fuck yeah!” song....it’s a parody of the red-state love for declaring how much ass they will kick overseas.  Remember, us liberals are the ones who are all “so worried about what other countries think of us”.  It’s a Republican anthem.  I can SWEAR to you that we weren’t all singing along with that piece of shit tune up here in Michigan.  You may not like it, but it’s true.

Let me restate:  Liberals don’t *appreciate* songs like that.  So, as I stated above, his whole “nationalistic hillbilly” gig might just be an act, and he is the biggest phoney ever.  However, that just shows how well he knows his audience.

How about letting him speak for himself.

I get roped into these political arguments, but the truth is I don’t see things right or left, I see them right or wrong. If you put check boxes on the left and right for all the big issues, my list will go back and forth all the way down. But all I have to do is disagree with a hardcore, far left liberal on one thing and they just mark me down with all the boxes on the right. And it’s pretty much the same thing on the other side.

That song says exactly how I feel about myself in the world. I have to deal with other celebrities assuming all my marks are in one column, and all it shows me is that most of those people are very uneducated. For instance, Sean Penn was accepting a humanitarian award from a freedom of speech organization recently and said Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and Toby Keith should be held accountable now that the Iraq war has gone astray. He’s lumping me in with these guys when my song clearly, word for word, indicated my support for the invasion of Afghanistan.

Now the difference between me and Sean Penn is that I’ve talked to 50 generals. I doubt he’s even talked to one. I didn’t support the war in Iraq and still don’t, but I’m sure I know more about it than he does. When he and Clooney get together and say we should go to Africa and stop the genocide, I’ll be the one over there performing for the troops when it happens.

I’m not going to apologize for where I stand. I am who I am, and if that bothers people it’s okay. And if you agree with me, that’s fine, too.

Hey now! I resemble that remark!

And for the record, I can’t stand Toby Keith. Of course, I don’t like Garth, Reba, Rodney Carrington or OU football, so I’m considered a heretic around here.
