"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"
-- Chief Justice John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 1803
I already attacked on douche bag for blaming the NIU shooting on video games. But this. This. Belong in some Left Wing Stupidity Hall of Fame:
If you’re wondering why Sen. Barack Obama’s message of hope has resonated with so many voters across the country, consider the shooting rampage at Northern Illinois University.
Oh, God, this isn’t going to end well. I read that sentence and I just know I’m going to read something monumentally and breathtakingly stupid.
How is it that we live in a country where a young man can get his hands on four weapons, including a shotgun?
Why are people walking around armed to the teeth?
The only reason I can think of is that too many people have lost hope.
Or, that we live in a country that has a second amendment designed to keep both government and criminals (not exclusive groups) in check. But we have a problem with a culture of violence among some segments of society.
We are living at a time when depression seems to be as common as a cold or flu. Yet what is depression but an impenetrable cloud of hopelessness?
Hopelessness is behind the violence that erupts on street corners and behind closed doors in middle-class homes where women have killed their children and tried to take their own lives.
And it is hopelessness that condemns innocent children like Demond Reed to an early death at the hands of an abuser, and lures young men and women to throw away their futures for a drug addiction that leads to wasted lives.
Or, it’s a culture of violence and bloodshed. And what the fuck does this have to do with the NIU shooter? He was not hopeless. He had a girlfriend and a future. He was working toward a degree and was respected. The baffling thing about him—and I noted this on my own blog—is he had everything to live for. As far as we can tell, he just popped a rivet. Would that rivet have stayed screwed on were Barack Obama president? I don’t think so.
She also talks about Virginia Tech. That wasn’t hopelessness either. That was a guy who a fucking psychotic nutcase. You know, I was a lonely guy back in high school. But (a) having an inspiring President (Reagan in this case) didn’t alleviate that; (b) I didn’t shoot up my school because I wasn’t fucking crazy. The idea never occurred to me and if it had, I doubt an inspiring President would have stopped it.
I know this is difficult for politicos and Democrats to understand. But for most of use, our happiness is not contingent on the resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
But while young people are dying as martyrs, adults with the power to make a difference are still arguing over the merits of gun control.
Obama is surging ahead because a lot of people are tired of believing they are powerless to heal an ailing nation.
Horseshit. The President can not heal broken hearts, lonely souls or shattered lives. There is nothing Barack Obama can do for these grieving families beyond giving them a hug. They do not need a President right now. They need each other, their families, their communities and their churches. And because America is, by and large, filled with wonderful, good and generous people, they are getting that—no matter who is in the Oval Office.
You guys know that I’m partial to Obama. But this is nonsense.
