Right Thinking From The Left Coast
"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"
-- Chief Justice John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 1803

The Huckabee Split

Republicans, you brought this upon yourselves.

Mike Huckabee is now becoming a very divisive figure in the Republican party. It’s not his faith or his Merry Christmas commercial that many conservatives question (I certainly don’t), but it’s his record as governor and his stated positions on the war, foreign policy generally, taxes, spending, and illegal aliens.  And exposing his positions is a natural part of the primary process.  He is now using his faith as a defense for populist/liberal/misguided policy positions and implying that those who disagree with him are challenging his faith — or more accurately, dismissing Evangelicals.

How did Huckabee become the spokesman for Christians anyway?  When did this happen?  A few weeks ago he was a little known governor from Arkansas with 2-percent national support among Republicans.  Now, he’s a spokesman for an entire religion, or part of it anyway.  (Also, I am not part of the Wall Street crowd, a neo-con or whatever, in case he or anyone on his staff is wondering.  Just an old-time Reaganite.)

It has come to this because the “Base” essentially wants four more years of Bush and this guy is the closest thing they can find. Remember, it’s now about who’s the biggest sky pixie worshipper, not who can cut the most spending, manage the most responsible foreign policy, or do the most to protect individual liberty-you know, actual, Reagan-style conservatism.

we need to elect a strong priest-king who will lead us to victory against the moon-worshippers.

In contrast, the new leader of the third-largest party in the UK has declared himself atheist on his first day in the job. Good luck to him.

This just shows how the Republican party has by taken over by the religious right and lost its core values.

I’d like a little clarification on who YOU think this “base” includes.

Remember, it’s now about who’s the biggest sky pixie worshipper

Didn’t help Pat Robertson in his bid for the job.

I don’t think this will hamper him one bit. I also liked Tony Blair’s comment (as if I didn’t like him enough already).
