Right Thinking From The Left Coast
"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"

The Chill Wind of Patriotism
by Lee

Following up onm this post, Daschle has goose bumps from the chill wind.

“It’s really a repulsive and outrageous attack, once again, on those who question the direction that much of the administration has taken with regard to Iraq,” said Daschle, a South Dakota Democrat.

“I think that there is an implication here, as they’ve done throughout this debate on Iraq, that if you oppose the president, your patriotism ought to be questioned,” Daschle said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.

Ah, an “implication.” So, in other words, the ad doesn’t question your patriotism, right Tom?  And this whole questioning of patriotism nonsense is nothing but a smokescreen to hide the fact that the GOP has your party by the balls, and you know it?  The ad doesn’t question your patriotism, but it does point out the indisputable fact that you are attacking the president for attacking terrorists.  Your opposition to the president’s programs and direction are fair game Tom, and you can piss and moan all you like, and hide behind Tim Robbins’ “chill wind,” but the truth is going to crucify you.

But Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona said he sees nothing wrong with the ad.

“It’s portraying the president’s leadership that he’s displayed since September 11, which I support,” McCain said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“I think it’s a very legitimate statement to be made in the coming presidential election. [Emphasis added]

“The fact is, the president of the United States is going to run for re-election to a large degree on his record of trying to secure America from the threat of terrorism,” he said. “I think that’s a very legitimate reason for him to do so.”

It’s not just a very legitimate statement, it is the legitimate difference between the two parties right now.  If it came down to other issues (trade, domestic policy, etc.) I could list a multitude of reasons not to vote for Bush.  But on the one issue right now that really counts, the wars on Terror and in Iraq, I support the president 150%, and he’s got my vote for that reason alone.
