The Bush Legacy
by Lee

This shouldn’t surprise anyone.

The Iraqi government has not yet fully met any of 18 goals for political, military and economic reform, the Bush administration said Thursday in an interim report certain to inflame debate in Congress over growing calls for a U.S. troop withdrawal.
In an assessment required by Congress, the administration accused Syria of fostering a network that supplies as many as 50 to 80 suicide bombers per month for al-Qaida in Iraq. It also said Iran continues to fund extremist groups.

The report said that despite progress on some fronts by the government of Nouri al-Maliki, “the security situation in Iraq remains complex and extremely challenging,” the “economic picture is uneven” and political reconciliation is lagging.

At a news conference that coincided with the report’s release, President Bush said, “I believe we should succeed in Iraq and I know we must.”

“The problem, my fellow Americans, is that I have clearly demonstrated that I am not the person to bring about this success.  I mean, look at this report.  Could I have screwed up the place even more?  So, yes, Iraq is vitally important, but you’re going to have to hang in there until the next election to get a president with a shot at victory, because God knows that person isn’t me.”

That’s about the only real option we have, since pulling out and letting the place collapse isn’t an option. We cannot afford another Vietnam at this point in history, regardess of the fact that this current Administration has done its level best to give us one. Unlike Vietnam, where the Communists did overrun SV, creating a bloodbath in the process, but then stopped at the shores of SV, our current enemy will, in addition to the aforementioned bloodbath, follow us back home to continue the bloodbath here.

(Actually, I’m speaking figuratively—they’re already here, awaiting their marching orders).

The Iraqi government has not yet fully met any of 18 goals for political, military and economic reform,

In his press conference this morning Bush said 8 of the 18 have been met, 8 have not, and 2 are too close to call.
Its interesting how this “surge” was presented by the president as basically a last ditch effort, this effort which was accepted by you, the majority here, both houses of the congress, and a large portion of the Amercian people as an effort to “shit or get off the pot”. All were on board as saying that Petraeus was a good man, lets give the surge a chance, and then evaluate on Sept. 15th.
I expected the Dems to equivicate, but I am surprised that some Republicans and you have reneged on your support.
I will give Petraeus until Sept. 15th, he goes before congress at that time with his analysis then. If he paints a bleak picture for future success and Bush ignores him, then you, congress, and the country can nail him.

iconoclast: Why isn’t pulling out and “letting it collapse” an option?

Also, if they are already here, then it is irrelevant whether or not you stay in Iraq w.r.t. future attacks on the US.

One more also.. the “current enemy” isn’t one single force with a single goal… a small portion are the foreign terrorists going on IED sleep-away camp in Iraq who might go to the US when they are done their successful recruiting drive (but more likely would stop in Europe first). A larger portion of the “enemy” are simply the locals who want the US out of the country and won’t follow afterwards. These people are also fighting their civil war with the Iraqis who only mostly hate the US and want them out.

So if Syria and Iran are funneling people and arms into Iraq why the fuck are we not bombing the living shit out of the Syrian and Iranian borders? I’m sure we have some old stuff we need to use up.

Cut off the source, weed them out on the inside, gain fucking control.

The thing that pisses me off the most about Bush and the fact that I voted for the fucker twice was the libitard socialist demoncrats had nothing/no one to offer as an real option. Fucking politicians.

2008 It doesn’t matter who you vote for

Why isn’t pulling out and “letting it collapse” an option?

In addition to the reasons I already gave, pulling out would demonstrate to the world (including our enemies) that we lack the resolve to finish the job, and would therefore embolden said enemies.

Also, if they are already here, then it is irrelevant whether or not you stay in Iraq w.r.t. future attacks on the US.

If the head of the snake is preoccupied in Iraq, it has fewer resources to plan an execute attacks in the US, even if personnel is already here. If we pull out of Iraq, the head of the snake can then concentrate on its objectives in the US.

One more also.. the “current enemy” isn’t one single force with a single goal…

Maybe not, but there definitely is that segment which will follow us back home—all other groups are irrelevant.

Hey, maybe we do suck and maybe we can’t do it without presenting it on the world stage, but I still think that there needs to be something done. The assumption that this would be effortless is probably the fault in all of this. Like it or not we still there and there is a job to be done. Much like any chore it compounds itself in effort the longer it goes unaddressed.

If we go with a full pullout option we might see a middle east run by Al Quaeda and a nuclear threat from more than a handful of middle east nations. If that’s kosher with everyone....
