Sleepy Time for Rudy
by Lee

The other day, in the discussion under this Ron Paul post, I wrote about Giuliani.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to like about Rudy, but he’s got an authoritarian streak in him that would make Bush look like a piker.

Via Sullivan comes this astonishingly disturbing quote from Rudy regarding the age-old torture method of sleep deprivation.

They talk about sleep deprivation. I mean, on that theory, I’m getting tortured running for president of the United States. That’s plain silly. That’s silly.

Read Sullivan’s comments, which provide background into the history of this technique—perfected by Uncle Joe Stalin.  This is my problem with conservatism today.  How in the name of sweet holy fuck did conservatism go from the Goldwater/Reagan concept of limited government to a group of men for whom Soviet torture techniques are perfectly acceptable?

Hey Rudy, you fucking asshole.  Any time you want to stop running for president and get some sleep you have that option.  When the people we’re “interrogating” have that same option then you can rightly say it isn’t torture.

What a dick.

I’m going to fisk that speech on my own site. It’s relaly appaling. That’s the same speech where he says about water-boarding “it depends who does it”.

Conservatives have been making jokes about this for a while. Remember Rumsfeld’s note that he had to stand for hours so why shouldn’t terror suspects have to?

These guys understand perfectly well that there is a difference between doing something of your own free will and being *forced*. But they think we’re too stupid to grasp that.

And the really sad thing is that so many of their followers *are* too stupid to grasp that oh-so important distinction.

This is the “Other” Rudy showing his face here, the guy whom most people didn’t see after he became “America’s Mayor.” He also said-and I’m not making this up-that he doesn’t know if waterboarding is torture, which got a great response from John McCain (which I posted about on my own blog). The question is, will such ignorance be enough to stop him from getting the nomination?

hmmm, i think sleep deprivation was used quite extensively during the Inquisition....

LEE, i thought you grouped sleep deprivation, in with mind fucking, which you was ok with…

Last week a few guys at lunch had this conversation, and i was quite surprised by their reaction, they WERE AGAINST torture.... There are not exactly the brightest bulbs in the plant, but still if they can see why it is a bad idea..........
Though one guy a ex-navy SEA BEE.... did thing all the tangos should have been shot on the field of battle if they didnt have relevant info to the situation at hand..

Oh another thing, had G Bush said This, it would be considered a admission of defeat....

Now think back, look how the tactics, and targets have changed in Iraq for the insurgents/tangos.
Look at how there has been a fall off in attacks. It is real alquada has pissed of the Iraqi people , and now it is coming back to bite them on the ass.

To an extent.  Keeping someone awake gets them off their game, makes them slip up.  But keeping someone awake for days and days, if not weeks, at a time can literally drive someone insane.

Remember back when the whole torture thing first came to light, and “belly slaps” were one of the authorized techniques?  A hard, open-handed slap to the belly, hurts like a motherfucker.  Now, is that torture?  I’d say it depends on how many times you do it.  You do it once or twice it might get someone’s attention.  You do it 50 or 100 or 200 times, then you’re torturing someone and you might even be putting them at risk of some kind of organ failure or intestinal bleeding or something.

So while I’m okay with keeping someone awake to throw them off their game, there does come a point where you’ve crossed a line between a mindfuck and torture.

ok i agree with ya on that, l just cant see how we are really gonna draw a solid line, so much is in the grey area, and many others would consider the mind fucking, torture.
Others would consider it Fraternity Pranks…
but that is another discussion.

i dont know what the record is but after a certain amount of time , no matter how many stims is in a person, they do shut down..
a few days at the most. In the last few hours the person is so incoherent, that any info gained then woudl be suspect.... just like under “real “ torture.
