Right Thinking From The Left Coast
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. - Albert Einstein

Sarah’s Holly Roller

Remember what I said earlier about Sarah Palin’s beliefs bothering me? Well, I’m now more bothered.

On July 20, 2008, the pastor of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s home church, Larry Kroon, delivered a sermon called “Sin Is Personal To God.” Kroon, the senior pastor of the non-denominational Wasilla Bible Church in Wasilla, Alaska, used the book of Zephanaiah as his reference point for discussing “that great day of the Lord when God will finally bring closure to human history… a day of wrath.” According to Kroon, “all things and all people” are going to bear the brunt of God’s “intense anger.” “There’s anger with God,” he proclaimed. “He takes sin personal.”

Kroon placed Zephaniah in a modern context, warning that the sinful habits of Americans would invite the wrath of God. “And if Zephaniah were here today,” Kroon bellowed, “he’d be saying, ‘Listen, [God] is gonna deal with all the inhabitants of the earth. He is gonna strike out His hand against, yes, Wasilla; and Alaska; and the United States of America. There’s no exceptions here — there’s none. It’s all.’”
....

Palin joined Wasilla Bible Church after leaving Wasilla Assembly of God, a Pentecostal church where she delivered a controversial sermon asking her audience to pray that the war in Iraq is “God’s plan.” When she is working in Alaska’s capitol, she worships at the Juneau Christian Center, another Pentecostal church where charismatic displays like speaking in tongues and dancing in the spirit are encouraged. Palin describes herself as a “Bible-believing Christian.”

Palin’s presence at Wasilla Bible Church has not been confirmed for the days Kroon warned of God “striking out his hand against… the United States of America” and “rais[ing] up” an alliance of nations to ruin America.

So, should we be concerned that this woman could be one heart attack away from having her finger on the button? Look, I want to give her a fair shake. I think she’s likeable, and smart, and could grow into the role of potential commander-in-chief. But given the direction of the Republican Party over the last several years, I think it’s fair to ask if this is what it’s all come down to-a choice between Christian Socialism with an end-times vibe, or Democratic Socialism with a nannystating vibe. We’ve got two months to figure it out.

Geez. This whole thing of ranting against the hysterically pro-evangelical anti-gay anti-abortion anti-evolution pro-christian REPUBLICAN BASE thing is so 90s. That was a marketing strategy from last century.

Enough!

Geez. This whole thing of ranting against (or pandering to) this so-called REPUBLICAN BASE is so 90s. What is this so-called base? It’s the hysterically pro-evangelical anti-gay anti-abortion anti-evolution pro-christian people. Nearly no real person cares about or has even heard of Dr. Dobson!

Enough!

(lol - ignore my previous mistyped comment which can be interpreted exactly the opposite of what I actually intended to say)

Or Ralph Reed.

I will never, never forgive Jimmy Carter for bringing the “evangelicals” out of the oblivion they had been in since the 1920s---or Reagan for selling his, and his party’s, souls to them.  It wasn’t like it was necessary, after all---I remember the 1980 election very, very well, and there was no way in Hell that Jimmy Carter was going to win a second term.  Bob Dole could have beaten him in 1980.

I still don’t understand how you people can know that the woman is a Christian, and yet be so surprised when she admits to believing what the Bible teaches. And how do you draw her being a “christian socialist” from one sermon she heard God knows how long ago. No where in the Bible does it tell Christians to try and take over the government and force their beliefs on anybody. As a matter of fact it says the complete opposite. To live at peace with all your neighbors, and to live a quite and simple life not concerning yourself with the things of the world.

1TH 4:11-12

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders

Rom 12:18

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Is there any doubt in the mind of any informed reader of the Bible that Zephaniah would be saying those things if he were here today?

The ignorance out there about Scripture is astounding, but should not be surprising given the hysteria of trying to find dirt on Palin.

The ignorance out there about Scripture is astounding

Well, there is so much of it, it covers every conceivable point of view, and almost none of it is in context; “scripture” basically says whatever the hell you want it to say.

As many people have pointed out over the centuries, religious texts can be used to argue both sides of any discussion with equal effectiveness.  There is no “ignorance” about scripture, just disagreements on which portions are the “correct” ones to use.

Seattle Outcast, you sort of get at why I find it astounding.  There’s this idea out there that you describe as “it...basically says whatever the hell you want it to sat.” No it doesn’t!  Scripture is pretty clear on many things, including the context of this post.  Zephaniah would absolutely be saying the same things today!

You’re illustrating the point of another post that was made recently:  the one about the decline of authority.  Sure there’s a lot of misinformation out there.  It takes an informed mind and a spirit of humility, but it’s pretty easy to discern the true from the false.

Find me one piece of scripture that can’t be opposed by another piece of scripture.

Oh, and ALL scripture is fair game, not just what happens to be in the bible.  That includes the freaking libraries full of theological writing accessible to scholars.

As for multiple interpretations of the same piece of scripture, that seems to be rather commonplace.  I see no reason to accept one interpretation as being more “correct” than any other.  If there was only one correct way to interpret your book of fairy tales, then there would only be one church....

I see no reason to accept one interpretation as being more “correct” than any other.

You sound like an ignorant buffoon, perfectly illustrating the “anything goes” mentality discussed in the earlier post.  There absolutely is reason to accept one as more correct than another!  We use our reason and good judgment to do so.  I can so hear those words being spoken defending junk science.  Why are you defending junk religion?

That’s quite a scandal. A Christian who actually believes in the bible and listens to sermons.

I didn’t pile on with the Rev. Wright scandal and I won’t this time. It’s stupid to go after their pastors or spiritual leaders since they rarely determine a politician’s platform in office. It was unfair with JFK and it’s dumb this time around. If Palin starts talking like Bush about how Jesus personally crashes at her place and tells her to do stuff, I’ll get annoyed, but until then, serious faith does not disqualify her.

He isnt defending junk religion, rather he is saying that they are all equally junky.

Bingo.

We use our reason and good judgment to do so.

If you were using reason and “good judgment” then you’d be an atheist.

I can so hear those words being spoken defending junk science.

You can debunk bad science with data.  Religion can be debunked all day long and the faithful don’t give a shit.

This has got to be one of the stupidest posts in a while. Who cares if her religion preaches the “day of judgement”. Most religions do have an “end of days” concept. Who the fuck cares. She is qualified, she is inteligent, she is passionate, she is a fighter, she is a reformer, she is the best person for the job.

What’s the next post ? Why her lipstick did not match so she must be color blind and she might hit the “RED” button instead of the green one ?

ALL of the prophetic writers in the last third of the OT would be saying EXACTLY what they were saying in 700-500 BC.  Anyone who thinks otherwise has never bothered to look at those books......

The ONLY difference between a Christian and Jewish interpretation of those books would be the solution to the problems that Zephaniah, Malachi and the rest of those writers outlined.

The problem isn’t so much that she might believe in this, it’s that she might decide to ...er… take it upon herself to .. er… help things along a bit… speed up the ending.... fast forward to the end of the movie.... cut to the chase… so to speak.

Posted by on 09/08/08 at 11:01 AM from United States

stogy--your fear is COMPLETELY unfounded and is based on PURE speculation.  Christians don’t see “speeding things up” as part of their role--they know God works on his own time.  I can see how non-Christians might be concerned, considering their perspective, but let me reassure you that is NOT how Christians see the end of days.

Dear Stogy,
you have anything to back up that fucking stupid comment?
You sound just as bad as those that accuse Brack Obamma of being a secret Muslim.
