No legacy is so rich as honesty - William Shakespeare
I’m creating this post to link to any press coverage I can find about today’s rally. Keep checking back for additions and updates.
From Reuters Asia:
“We all support our troops and our president to dethrone the oppressive Iraqi regime. We are all patriots here and we have God on our side,” said Les Erekson, a San Franciscan native and former U.S. Navy sailor.
“For weeks all we have seen here are the protests from liberals who don’t give a damn about America. What we’re doing is something the rest of America supports,” added Erekson, waving a giant American flag.
From Benecia News:
Keynote speaker Bassam Al-Husaini, West Coast representative of the Iraqi American Council, declared his support for military action in Iraq. “The Iraqi people are waiting for this liberation. Saddam Hussein’s massacre has to stop,’’ Al-Husaini said as the crowd chanted “U.S.A.’’ and “Down with Saddam.’’
The organizer of the rally, Alfredo Najera, whose brother is a U.S. Marine, criticized anti-war protesters, calling them “hypocrites.’’ He also expressed his admiration for the San Francisco Police Department and their handling of anti-war protests in recent weeks.
From KGO TV:
A few hundred people gathered today in San Francisco near City Hall to show support for U.S. troops in the Middle East.
They waved American flags and carried signs that said “Support Our Troops,” before pausing for a moment of silence to honor those who’ve already died.
Organizers say several threats have been made against those participating in the rally. And police had to break up a fight between a peace activist and a troop supporter shortly after the noon event began.
Two days of mass anti-war demonstrations last week led to about 2,200 arrests.
