Right Thinking From The Left Coast
"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"
-- Chief Justice John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 1803

Please Don’t Mention That Briar Patch

It’s got to be tough to be a Democrat.  So many competing special interest groups to balance.  The Dems know that a free trade agreement with Columbia will be a good thing for this country.  But they also know they’ll lose support from the economically ignorant and/or unions.  So what do they do?

First step, break the rules and stall.  Prevent a vote until after the election.

Second step, triangulate.  Have Dems not running for election be in favor of the deal so Dems running for election can oppose it.

The latter, BTW, is another reason to fear a Clinton presidency.  Bill was a master of triangulation—the art of coming down on both sides of an issue.  I’ll never forget the 1996 campaign when he ran on his record of welfare reform while simultaneously promising to repeal it.  If Hillary gains the Oval Office, expect more of this.  The media will gobble it up—“Hillary and Bill disagree on policy!  What principled people!” But it’s really a fancy version of what Bill did for eight years—come down on both sides of every issue.
