"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"
-- Chief Justice John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 1803
Think you know how to fix the federal budget? Leftie blogger Nathan Newman has set up a budget simulator whereby you can see the net effect of your changes. Here’s mine.
Old budget was $3251.488 billion ($2264.172 billion in spending, $987.316 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
New budget is $3216.46 billion ($2304.15 billion in spending, $912.31 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
You have cut the deficit by $35.03 billion. Your new deficit is $321.97 billion.
Now, to be fair, there are a lot of things that don’t exist in this simulation, such as scrapping the IRS in favor of a flat tax or a national sales tax, but it should give you a general idea. I was honestly surprised that my budget was not smaller than it turned out to be. Post your results in the comments, see if you do any better.
