My Ass Flies Free

Looks like some people in Canada will be flying for two:

Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Thursday.

The high court declined to hear an appeal by Canadian airlines of a decision by the Canadian Transportation Agency that people who are “functionally disabled by obesity” deserve to have two seats for one fare.

The airlines had lost an appeal at the Federal Court of Appeal in May and had sought to launch a fresh appeal at the Supreme Court. The court’s decision not to hear a new appeal means the one-person-one-fare policy stands.

No word yet on whether they get two inflight meals as well.

This is wonderful news.  Since I’m 6’5” and spend all coach flights with my knees smashing painfully into the seat in front of me, I can now state that I have a right to have the seat in front of me removed for the duration of the flight.

Fucking disgusting fat people, and I say this as a guy who used to weigh 430 lbs.  If you want to fit into a normal sized world LOSE SOME FUCKING WEIGHT YOU TUBBY, DISGUSTING PIECE OF WORTHLESS SHIT.  if you find that you can’t fit into cars or plane seats or booths at restaurants, the answer is NOT for the world to change for you, it’s to recognize that you are DISGUSTING FAT SCUMBAG and to do something about it.

As a previous fat bastard myself (well, I’m not exactly thin now, but I’ve lost almost 1/2 my mass in 14 months and am a LOT smaller) I have to say that this is just fucking stupid.  Of course, I’m one of those rare people that admits that I was the fat one and that it was because I ate too much shit… never tried to pull that “it’s not my fault” crap.

I flew for work a few times at my largest and completely took responsibility for making sure that I knew the airline rules and did a few flights where I had to get 2 seats.  Most airlines (or at least Southwest for sure) will do a provisional one that you get refunded if the flight wasn’t full.. which is fairly easy to ensure by adjusting your schedule slightly (vs expecting others to suffer).  I did a few trips to SF (I live in San Diego) for work conferences driving, because flying was that uncomfortable for me and I wanted to avoid it.

I flew back east this summer for vacation for the first time since 2000, and man was it a lot easier since dropping a lot of the weight.  Of course it was even easier because I splurged and went first class too (which wasn’t that expensive, I bought months ahead of time).

Ooh.. Lee I had you beat.  I’d made it up to 461 myself.  Before anyone asks: No, I don’t know how the hell I let it get that bad before I did something about it either.  It’s amazing how much you can keep rationalizing things or thinking you’ll do something about it soon.. and don’t.

Finally was teetering into diabetes (was on metformin but didn’t need to take readings or use insulin.. yet) and got off my ass and am 14 months into a medically supervised program.  Already committed to staying on their maintenance system once I get down some more too.. that’s where my was, not sticking to a regimen after loosing weight about 11 years ago.  Oh, and the loss thus far has already allowed me to drop the meds.

Lee, don’t hold back.  Tell us what you really think.

My thesis advisor was also about 6’5”.  He keeps saying he’s going to write a manifesto about how awful it is to be that tall.  (Planes in South America are even worse).  I always reply that, as a 5’9” man who has read studies about how chicks prefer tall guys, I’m not exactly crying a river of sympathy.

PS - Congratulations in the wight loss, Miguelito!  Good to hear.

Canada and economic realities don’t seem to be on the same flight…

If I was running that airline I’d announce a new policy:

“In light of the recent court decision, we will now be offering two seats for the price of one to our larger passengers. However, those two seats will be completely surrounded by every child under the age of ten on board, accompanied by their parents. Priority will be given to teething babies, seat-kicking brats and nauseous toddlers.”
