"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,
if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"
-- Chief Justice John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 1803
Today at lunch the subject of the North Hollywood bank robbery came up. I was describing to the Chinese how, a decade ago, I was sitting at work watching this amazing gunfight live on TV. They couldn’t really comprehend what I was talking about so I found it on YouTube. I thought some of you might not have seen this before, so here it is for your enjoyment.
Those of you who have seen the movie Heat might find this familiar. The huge gunfight in that movie was based on this incident.
I’ll make you a little homesick. At the time I worked at Lankershim and Magnolia. We had a guy with a police scanner on this one from minute one.
There is one small point of contention, but I have no way to back it up. The police actually commandered the guns from either a local Pawn Shop or a local Gun Shop (I forget, it’s been a decade).
However, I do remember hearing the police over the scanner talking and the distinct whistling sounds going on in the background. The guy with the scanner was a vet and just kept saying “These guys are using artillery rounds.”

That’s absolutely true, and it’s even mentioned in the video. They were so hopelessly outgunned that they ran to a gun store and got proper weaponry.
And they borrowed a Brinks armored truck, which just goes to show that private industry will save the day when it comes down to it.

No, the video glosses it, but they actually stole those arms by and large.
The video talks about how smart they got, but they were not waiting around for a warrant. Remember, no police officer could’ve worked with the weaponry recieved without a warrant.
not to mention that their proficiency with ther arms sucked ass. one of the bad guys was hit in the leg with a hand gun round, he went down and the cops swarmed him shooting.

Kinda OT but Heat came out before this happened. Must be a rumor that gets passed around.

well, by God, lets arrest those officers and put them in jail.
What I found interesting was the lack of automatic weapons for the good guys. About 3 months after 9/11 the CHP put AR-15’s in ALL squad cars, supervisors all had sniper rifles with scopes. Most of us were fairly proficient at dropping a suspect at 200 meters. I can’t imagine a more helpless feeling than trying to protect yourself with a pistol and shotgun against that kind of fire power.

The show Life references a shootout like this one as part of their backstory - I think they refer to it as the “Bank of America robbery”

I never said that. you’re a little quick to judge this time.
Even if this were brought to trial and I was a jury member, I would vote not guilty.

Since you mentioned it twice this would imply a feeling on your part that some retribution was in order.

In this case I was pointing out that a law even worked to interfere with law enforcement.
