FF IX Veteran of Psychic Wars

Wow. Frickin cool. Just made it on my YouTube favorites list.

Posted by dwex on 03/28/08 at 10:43 AM from United States

While my musical tastes are quite diverse (as shown by the stuff I posted in the last one of these threads), my true loves are (a) progressive rock and (b) instrumental guitar. For today’s version of this thread I decided to post a playlist of progressive rock icons over the last 30 years. Some of these are well known, some not. In some cases, I chose lesser-known tracks from well-known artists.

Hope you enjoy this:

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Karn Evil #9
“Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends”. Felt like an appropriate way to kick this off.

The Moody Blues - Question
Just an all-around good track

Jethro Tull - Aqualung
No, the singer’s name is not Jethro Tull…

The Alan Parson’s Project - The Raven
From their first album “Tales of Mystery and Imagination”, a concept album based on Edgar Allan Poe stories. One of my favorite albums of all time. This is also a classic use of the vocoder, back when this was a relatively new invention.

Genesis - Ripples
While many prog rock fans disagree with me, I think Genesis’ best era was post Peter Gabriel, pre pop sellout (from “A Trick of the Tail” through “Duke")

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Written for Syd Barrett, who’d gone well off the rails and been replaced by David Gilmour. Even though this clip is from a post-Roger Waters tour, I think it’s a great rendition of a phenomenal track.

Rush - The Trees
Proving that there are occassionally good exports from Canada (kidding!), Rush is one of my all-time favorite groups. 2112 is probably their classic prog-rock album/track, but this is one of my favorites, too.

Kansas - Icarus
Prog rock from the American heartland of the 1970s. While Kansas is generally thought of as an AOR band, they were actually quite prog. Just didn’t get airplay of the prog stuff.

Journey - Look Into The Future
I’ll bet a lot of people are suprised to see Journey on a prog-rock playlist. This album is the 2nd of Journey’s 3 pre-Steve Perry albums. A 4 piece band, with 3 ex-Santana folk (Neil Schon, Greg Rolie & Ross Valory), with Ansley Dunbar on drums (a well-known session player). GripeBoy had a topic about Journey in the Greg Rolie era vs the Jonathan Cain era; this track from the pre-Steve Perry era is total prog, and full of win.

Yes - Turn of the Century
Probably the first band people think of when they think of progressive rock. This track, from the “Going For The One” album, has probably never been heard by non-fans. Please give it a listen. This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard, of any genre. Depending on my mood, listening to this will sometimes bring me to tears.

Marillion - Easter
The first of the 2nd wave of prog rock bands. They’ve had 2 incarnations, with 2 different lead singers. I prefer the 2nd one, and this is one of the most beautiful tracks from their current era.

Asia - Time Again
Most people remember Asia from their MTV days around 1982 with a couple of pop songs (e.g. “Only Time Will Tell"). This group was formed by ex-Yes, ELP and King Crimson members - serious prog cred. This was perhaps their most progressive track. This video is from a reunion tour last year, because I couldn’t find any videos from their original era other than the pop tracks.

Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe - Birthright
A short-lived group of ex-Yes members. They only made one album, plus a tour album, before merging back with Yes for the “Union” album (eh) and tour (amazing - Yes with 8 musicians onstage, wow).

Dream Theater - Learning To Live
The standard-bearer for the progressive-metal movement of the 1990s. Probably my favorite band of all time (having dethroned Yes), because the first time I heard them (their “Awake” album), my reaction was “wow, that’s exactly the music I would make if I was actually any good”.

Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift
A prog-metal “supergroup” side project, with 2 from Dream Theater on drums & guitar, and 2 session musicians on keys and bass (actually, Chapman Stick). GripeBoy probably loves Tony Levin on bass or stick.

Shadow Gallery - Crystalline Dream
Same song as I posted last time, a different video. They are pretty unknown, but I love them. Wish they had more videos available, because they rock.

Enchant - Under Fire
Another almost-unknown prog rock/prog metal group. They came out of California in the 1990s. GripeBoy will probably appreciate the bass player here, too.

One notable absence from this list, if you know about prog rock, is King Crimson. For whatever reason, I just really do not like King Crimson. I’ve tried over and over to get into them for 25+ years, and I just can’t.

If anyone has prog rock recommendations, send them along.

River of Deceit

dwex, your wish is my command - a progressive rock tune with strong instrumental for good measure.

Listen to the lyrics; given he is now dead of a drug overdose, they are chilling.

Same bunch with a sultry sound reminiscent of Smithereens:

Long Gone Day

Man, I used to listen to Mad Season incessantly.  Good stuff right there, flogg.

Manwhore’s caught me in another weird mood.  A good progressive instrumental from Jane’s Addiction:

Three Days

Posted by dwex on 03/28/08 at 12:02 PM from United States

One interesting thing I’ve noticed - I don’t believe I own a single rock album from any group whose first album came out in this century. I just cannot get into any new rock. It all sounds bad to me - musically, lyrically and/or vocally. I’ve gotten into some new pop and country artists, but there’s no rock act less than 8 years old that has any appeal for me whatsoever. I keep trying to find new stuff, but it all sounds ich to me.

Posted by on 03/28/08 at 12:10 PM from United States

I just cannot get into any new rock.

I don’t much either, dwex.  Most all of my links have been from 90’s and earlier bands.  “Three Days” was about ‘89, I believe, and the Mad Season is from c. 1996/7 (maybe Thrill can correct me).

Try this one, its a real generation gapper:

Shirley Bassey and the Propeller Heads

Posted by on 03/28/08 at 12:40 PM from United States

I think “Above” came out in 1994.  I was still in high school at the time.  That album is one of the most “perfect” ever recorded.

As for new bands, I’ve really taken a liking to Muse.  They have a very unique and enjoyable sound.

Knights of Cydonia

Starlight

Supermassive Black Hole

Posted by on 03/28/08 at 12:52 PM from United States

I’ll add a few more from my own collection:

“Le Disko” by Shiny Toy Guns.

“Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode.

“Army of Me” by Bjork

“Brena” by A Perfect Circle

Just to wake your asses up:

“Astonishing Panorama of the Endtimes” by Marilyn Manson.

BeBe & CeCe Winans - Bridge Over Troubled Water

The Lemonheads - Mrs. Robinson

Yep. I have one of their albums on cassette. You know, those squeaky, sequential access, pains-in-the-ass from before everyone switched to those now anachronistic, shiny discs.

They have a very clean sound.

Because some of those covers are amazing. The studio recording of Yes’ America is astonishing. And The Bangles Hazy Shade of Winter is far better than the original (that song really doesn’t work well acoustically).

Covers are perhaps the most sincere form of respect that exists in music…

I’ve said it before but these music threads really bring us together. All the differences of opinion, the rhetoric or the seemingly hostile comments go out the window. Suddenly you realize, we’re all just folks. Good folks. We always need to always keep that in mind.

I know this may pussify Thunderdome™ somewhat. I’ll just take a beating on another thread to even it out. :-)

Both are good selections.  However, I think Marilyn Manson’s The Reflecting God. would suit this site better.

When I’m God
Everyone DIES
Scar can you feel my power
Shoot here and the world gets smaller
....
No salvation
No forgiveness

Or maybe even Irresponsible Hate Anthem would work too.  I think Lee would back me up on this.

I wasn’t born with enough middle fingers.

I can respect that.  The problem with me is that once I’m really attached to a song.  I like that version and no other with few exceptions.  I often dislike live versions of a song even by the same artist if it strays too far from the recorded version I’m familiar with.

Posted by dakrat on 03/28/08 at 04:50 PM from United States

I always loved “1996” from that album.  My all time favorite MM album is actually “Portrait of an American Family.”

I think “Golden Age of Grotesque” is a masterwork.  A magnum opus.  Which is why I’m so disappointed in his recent album.

My favorite from Portrait is “Get Your Gun.”

I hate therefore I am.

Posted by on 03/28/08 at 05:06 PM from United States

Holywood is a fine album.  It’s more like Antichrist Superstar, which was refreshing after Mechanical Animals.  I always hated that one.

Posted by on 03/28/08 at 05:08 PM from United States

I often dislike live versions of a song even by the same artist if it strays too far from the recorded version I’m familiar with.

Don’t go see Van Morrison then. I’ve heard him play versions that were barely recognizable. Sometimes I like that though. It’s like, I have the recording. I’ve heard it played live. Now for something completely different.

But as far as covers go, there are some different ways to look at it. When someone does their “take” on a cover, I usually see that as a reflection of how they’re responding to the original. That can be good or bad. A lot of times, live, covers are just to give everybody something familiar to enjoy.

We played three in our set last night:

Anything Can Happen - Finn Brothers
Time Is Running Out - Muse
(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding - Elvis Costello (Nick Lowe actually)
