Growing Like a Weed
by Lee

Interesting results in the pot smoking survey from yesterday.  The number of people who smoke weed, who never smoke it, and who used to smoke it but don’t any more, are all roughly proportional.  Generally speaking, if you count the current and former smokers as one group, the smokers outnumber the non-smokers by a 2:1 margin.

It’s just another indicator, I think, of the changing demographics of this blog.  At one point a couple of years ago I was getting about 4,000 visits a day.  Now it’s down to 1,500 or so.  The change started about the time that I really started to question the GOP and its commitment to conservative principles.  A lot of the true believers left (in other words, people who came here primarily to have their beliefs confirmed) and what’s left is what we have here now, more of a group of free-thinking people from all areas of the political spectrum.

Great stuff!

Uh oh, Lee you may want to warn the anti-mary jane snobs here that they are slumming it amongst a bunch dumb ol’ stoners… wait a second how did fire enough synapses to type that out?

Well, I don’t want to come across as a The Register fanboy all of a sudden, but it is relevant:

Afghanistan’s fun-loving Taliban have deployed a hitherto unknown tactic in evading detection in their war against allied forces: take refuge in 10-foot high, fireproof marijuana forests.

Despite Canadian troops’ best efforts to burn down the monster dope plantations, the weed continues to offer excellent cover for the insurgents, Reuters reports.

It’s all good. I’d rather be here than in a room full of parrots.

Which one of you punks said that!

Maybe some of you hippie dope smokers will run north and join the Army now…

Just wait for Michael Moore’s next flick or book, I’m guessing it will spike again.  I don’t think I would have found this site without Moorewatch.

"mary-jane snobs”?

Perhaps if stoners weren’t such reliable and accurate stereotypes there wouldn’t be any such thing as a “mary-jane snob”....

Yes because everyone who smokes pot is a draft doging hippy. (note singular vs. plural)
After I am done rolling my eyes at people who make ignorant comments I am thankful afterwards, it gives me reference as to who not to take seriously in the future.

You mean “anti-mary jane snobs” right or has all of the bourbon taken its toll?

All of you with visions of Birkenstock wearin’, pachuli smellin’, Phish-listen’, hackysack playin’ stereotypical stoners in your head have to realize you are picturing fuckin young stupid punk teenagers (young adults). And guess what most of those kids are stupid whether they are stoners or not.
I get the feeling some of the stereotypers here also envision all black people in blackface dancing to a mistrel and every mexican to be wearing a sombrero twirling his curly thick mustache.

Let’s rename this the “christ-punching liberal dope smokers” blog.

Why just the other day, a liberal posted a comment on here and no one called him a fucking idiot.

I should note that the opposite is nearly true if you count current non-smokers as one group, regardless of past behavior and people who do or would as the other.

Lee: A couple years ago there was a presidential election, too. I suspect the traffic counts reflected that.

Excellent point.  Let’s refine the data a little bit more.  I’ve created a poll in the forums to determine whether readers of this blog would support legalization of weed or not.  Linky

Posted by dakrat on 10/13/06 at 07:01 PM from United States

Okay so far 16 people have viewed it and 3 have actually voted.  Pitiful.  That’s worse than the voting record of our county, which was pitiful to begin with.

Posted by on 10/13/06 at 07:14 PM from United States

I don’t like your choices.  I know enough about marijuana but don’t give 2 shits about it being legalized or not so long as I don’t have to be around it.  Cant’ stand the smell, I’d rather be in smoke filled bar than around one joint.

Posted by on 10/13/06 at 07:16 PM from United States

Where will we get the liberal view point now?

Nice one.  There’s always ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and CNN…

Interestingly, that’s basically Jonah Goldberg’s explanation as to why AA failed: it was competing with NPR and everybody listens to NPR. It’s true; I just put Sirius radios in all our cars, and the very first thing I did was make presets for 134 and 135, the two NPR channels.  Their budget is probably hundreds of times what Air America’s was.  Why did we try to mirror Limbaugh on the left when NPR had massively more reach and audience than he did? And our people don’t have to be clowns the way Rush, Coulter, and O’Reilly do to get the audience.

Goldberg also makes the point that it’s silly to try to imitate the right-wing’s nasty little think tanks like AEI, Heritage Foundation, and Cato Institute; we already have entire universities. As with NPR, any one of the Ivy League schools probably has ten times the budget of all the conservative think tanks put together.

Did Bob make a boo-boo?

Posted by on 10/13/06 at 07:24 PM from United States

Sorry, wrong thread. What happened is that I had multiple threads open in different FireFox tabs, and the login function redirected me to the wrong thread. It’s happened before, so I have to assume that it’s some kind of right-wing conspiracy to make me look stupid.  I’ll have you know I don’t need any help.

Mark your calendars.  Bobo speaks the truth on 10/13/06.

;) Yuk yuk yuk…

Right now we have a sort of conditional cease-fire because the GOP is out of control and totally pissing off a lot of people here.  If the dems take back control of Congress (because the GOP doesn’t deserve it anymore), we can go back to being two Sherman Tanks openly despising each other.

Dude… you start out talkin’ about the ganj and end up dismissing a drop in traffic as ‘only the cool people are left’?

Did I just drop into the Cheech&Chong;blog?

Seriously… more blogs… traffic gets spread around.

Besides… How committed “to conservative principles” do you think (D)emocrats are?

As a Libertarian my supreme wakeup call was when Clinton(D) said “But I didn’t inhale"…

That day I realized the (D)emocrats had dumped me and my individual rights into the toilet for power.

Do the (R)’s suck?  Of course they do.  They are the 2nd worse political party in America.

Don’t bogart that joint bud…

Yeah, I am not happy with the choices either in the straw poll either. I support some level of decriminalization - certainly , small amounts, medical marijuana, stuff like that, and putting the resources of the police and the criminal justice system into areas where they are much more needed.

However, I don’t want the kind of society where it is all I smell when I walk down the street; where users mix it with other stuff (like acid-laced) or even alcohol. In Amsterdam people know how to handle their dope. But London now is zombie territory. I guess I just don’t want it to become too much part of the regular party culture.

Maybe I’m getting old…

Maybe I’m getting old…

My husband still smokes pot and the way I can tell he’s got a couple of tokes on board is he will do the dishes after lunch.  Daddy stacking the dishwasher, must have some new supply in.

You are confusing the losers you know that are open about their toking with those that surround you in your personal/professional life that would never admit to it because it’s a crime. The sample is skewed due to the underground nature of responsible “midnight tokers”.

De-criminalize possession for personal use and you’d see that stoners are just normal people who prefer a bong hit over a belt of scotch or chain smoking tobacco.

To hear constant criticism of the present admin. choices are abundant.  You are doing nothing that any joe blow has been doing, therefore now you just blend in.  You do offer some solutions as opposed to the rest but the criticism is higher than the solutions, IMO.  Personally I frequent this site less and less for the sheer reason the subject matter is pretty much one to two themes.  Many times I have came here hoping when some news of signifiance is happening, I would find a thread on it and hear your take and others that frequent on here opinions.  The majority of the time you are not even discussing it.
The pot question of who does, did and has never seems like something Rolling Stone would find of value of their readership.  Man, that mag has went down in quality, as well.

Lee, you used to have much shorter posts, full of quick wit and great stories.  Now, you go on pag and after page, anti-Iraq this, “we are torturers” that, and your rants on evolution vs. creationism are, frankly, a crock of shit.

To build on what the last comment said, I used to come here to get something I couldn’t get anywhere else.  Now, I come here and get Andrew Sullivan Lite.’

Go back and read your blog posts in 2003 and 2004.  There is a huge difference.

That’s rich. If you want a crock of shit try the whole of creationism - it’s grade A bullshit from start to finish. What Lee says is overly tolerant, I reckon.

Reality check. Have you seen the websites of calnative and tomfool? Before you try to debate with them, check those links. First you have calnative’s love of music on her horrendous myspace page:

I am very passionate about music. Love mostly all genres. The exceptions are rap and pop. 98% of rap, 95% pop, I dislike.

Uh ok. That’s about half of all music being produced right now. Did I mention that I love all animals except for mammals and insects?

Then you have tomfool who spends one of his once-a-year posts on musing that those who say Gorbachev ended the Cold War are dissing Reagan. Um, who was in charge of the USSR at the time, you ignorant fuck? Yeah, Reagan walked on water and will return to save us from our sins, I realize that. But not to give at *least* half the credit to the father of perestroika is just pure, well, tomfoolery.
