Give Me a Global Warming Break

Here is John Stossel’s report on global warming:

Now, I don’t quite agree with everything here. It’s becoming clearer than human activity bears at least a plurality of the responsibility for the temperature rise. And if the resources exist to diffuse a potential danger, they should be utilized.

However, I post the video for one reason—the last few minutes. The increasingly strident and frankly fundamentalist tone of the global warming (oh, excuse me, “climate change") crowd is alarming. As a scientist myself, I get nervous when people claim that the debate is over and go so far as to make death threats against those who dissent.

The problem with being objective on this issue is that you wind up with your guns pointed in every direction. I disagree with the deniers but won’t drink the Kyoto Kool-Aid of the supporters. Funny me, I’m focused on the facts. And the fact, while disconcerting, are not cause for panic and dismay, but sensible action.

God Damn the fires down here in San Diego are getting insane.

Evacs are close to 6 figures of people by now I think.  If the wind shifts North (blowing south) it’ll effect my area too, then we’re talking possibly million+ people.

Work told us to stay home today, already told us to stay home tomorrow too.

211 system they setup (web and phone) for calls overloaded.

Haven’t heard any blaming on GW yet though.

Per the actual science of climate change - humans have contributed to a <.5 degree C change over the last century.  Considering that most of the temp measurements themselves are more than a little suspect, even that is debatable.

Not worried.

I’ve always liked John Stossel.  He’s a diamond in the rough as far as newsmen go.

There is simply a culture surrounding AGW (anthropogenic global warming) believers that seems like a kind of post-modern religion--highly dogmatic, intolerant of heresy, and apocalyptic.  I’ve spent countless hours researching and discussing this issue and it’s very clear to me that things aren’t as the AGW orthodoxy would have you believe.  Things aren’t as dire as they claim, nor do we have a sufficient level of scientific understanding to make the judgments they make.  I mean, when you think about it, all of this is based on a bunch of computer simulations that are deeply flawed--not properly accounting for such things as rain, cloud cover or solar variations, just to name the more obvious ones.  These simulations and predictions are based on a temperature monitoring network that has enormous problems and whose error greatly exceeds the amount of potential global temperature change.

Look, it’s not that I question that we might have an impact on the climate--mankind obviously has great potential to impact his own environment.  I just haven’t been sold yet, and neither have many intelligent and knowledgeable people who get shut out of the process (which is highly politicized).  So before we move ahead with policies that could devastate our competitiveness, let’s be totally sure on this.

Give them time.

So your ignoring the strong correlation between the output of human-activity generated greenhouse gases (co2, methane) and temperature change, and trusting that this is a statistical anomaly?
