Right Thinking From The Left Coast

Flight 93

Andrew Sullivan links to this movie teaser and states:

When you see this trailer, you’ll either start choking up, or think that Hollywood’s exploitation of tragedy has finally gone too far. I choked up.

I tend to think that Hollywood’s exploitation of tragedy has really hit a new fucking low.

I can’t get the movie to play.  Even in IE *shudders*

Well, we’ve numerous movies about Pearl Harbor, I can’t really see where this is much different except that the families of the victims are still living.

I assume that they will be protrayed as the common man become heros that they were.....

Posted by West Virginia Rebel on 01/07/06 at 05:22 PM from United States

It seemed OK to me...at least it isn’t a “Blame America” movie like Syriana.

Posted by on 01/07/06 at 06:22 PM from United States

I’m more of a “Grandma’s Boy” movie goer anyway.

Exactly.  It’s not that this isn’t a great story, nor that it shouldn’t be told.  But it hasn’t even been five yeas, and we’ve got two movies in production dealing with 9/11, one being directed by Oliver Stone of all people.  These are stories that should be told, but not so damn quickly.  It’s just tasteless, no matter how it’s presented.

Now, do you think for a second that the hijackers are going to be portrayed as bloodthirsty murdering Islamofascist scum?  Not on your life.  They’ll be shown in a way that the viewer will begin to understand them, that we might have some insight into why they committed this act.  Typical Hollywood bullshit.

Posted by West Virginia Rebel on 01/07/06 at 06:42 PM from United States

If you’re looking for a really good 9-11 movie, I’d recommend D.C. 9-11: Time Of Crisis, with Timothy Bottoms as President Bush.

I’m going to disagree with you on that one. I really don’t think hollywood is THAT stupid.

The only thing I want to understand about a terrorist is that they’re no longer breathing.

Posted by on 01/07/06 at 07:07 PM from United States

They should let me write the script - the terrorists would be evil beyond comprension, have skid-marked drawers, BO, nasty teeth, and be blowing each other the evening of Sept 10.....

I really don’t think hollywood is THAT stupid.

After seeing some behind the scenes and actual quotes from the those working on the series Sleeper Cell, I believe they ARE stupid. Just as stupid as the film makers in Europe.

Throw in a hypocritical, southern Baptist preacher and you got yerself a Hollywood blockbuster.

Munich, anyone?

What next? a remorseful movie about the Raid on Entebbe?

What’s up with Munich? The preview looked good. I admit I don’t know the premise.

Oh, sure they are.  No filmmaker in Hollywood is going to want to be perceived as stereotyping all Arabs as terrorists.  This is just my guess, but you’re going to have a character in the movie, maybe one of the passengers or someone working at the airport or something, who is an Arab.  Trust me on this one.  Ironically, prior to 9/11 showing Arabs as terrorists was perfectly acceptable.  It was only after 9/11 that it became verboten.

As mentioned above, Munich is a great example of moral equivalency.  Admittedly I haven’t seen it, and I’m sure it’s a great film, but it smacks to me of Spielberg’s attempt at exactly what I said above, understanding the enemy.  Another really good recent example is Ridley Scott’s film about the Crusades, Kingdom of Heaven.  Basically the Christians and the Muslims were shown to be these secular businessmen who liked and respected each other, and were sent into war only by religious zealots, as if religious belief really had nothing to do with the crusades, and if only we got to know and understand each other a little better then there wouldn’t be war or conflict.

Mark my fucking words, this is going to be a feel-good liberal crapfest.

Posted by Lee on 01/07/06 at 08:09 PM from United States

Palestinians kill the Jews at Munich.  Israel sends assassins to kill the Palestinians.  Lots of plaintive wailing and soul searching on the part of the Israeli commandos as they realize that they are no better than the Palestinian terrorists.

Spielberg is a Jew, but he’s a Hollywood liberal first.

Posted by on 01/07/06 at 08:29 PM from United States

I want to see it. Those passengers were heros.

Of course, if they try to sell some moral equivalency, I’m going to be pissed.

Posted by on 01/07/06 at 09:00 PM from United States

Spielberg is a Jew, but he’s a Hollywood liberal first.

I wonder how he feels in the wake of the Gaza chaos. How can anyone defend those animals?

I lost a lot of respect for him after he fucked with the “ET” DVD release. Fucking dumbass, bleeding heart liberals.

Posted by West Virginia Rebel on 01/07/06 at 09:14 PM from United States

Judging from what I’ve seen at the film’s official website, it looks promising. It was made with the permission of all of the passengers’ families and seems a pretty fair depiction of events.

Posted by JimK on 01/07/06 at 10:29 PM from United States

You think it’s exploitative because you’re not a drama queen who is in love with his own “maverick-ness”, Lee.  You’re a human being, not a caricature like Sullivan.

Posted by Brian at Tomfoolery on 01/07/06 at 10:54 PM from United States

Sullivan only wants the one passenger who fought back, the one who is gay, to call his lover rom the plane.  If that scene isn’t in there, he’ll be unhappy.

Posted by on 01/07/06 at 10:57 PM from United States

I’m watching a bunch of 9/11 documentaries on The History Channel and I feel like gutting a fucking terrorist right now. I’d fucking torture the bastard for hours with every act, object or substance they find offensive, then shit on the corpse before setting it on fire. (Well...maybe not that last part)

I’m still so pissed about 9/11 that I don’t think I could watch this movie without flying into a rage and tearing up the theatre. If that’s what you mean about it being too soon, Lee, then I understand.

I think people in Hollywood are so removed from 9/11 and the emotions associated with it that they feel it’s perfectly acceptable to make these movies now.

I’ll wait until the movie is released to pass judgement. Maybe, just maybe, it will be done tastefully.

Posted by West Virginia Rebel on 01/07/06 at 11:32 PM from United States

JimK: Lee’s not a caricature-but he can still be a drama queen. Remember him threatening to quit? : )

For my own money, Hollyweird is so far removed from reality that they can only see 9-11 in an abstract way...to them, everything and everyone is just part of the scenery on their set.

Posted by on 01/08/06 at 12:25 AM from United States

Uhhh..I am waiting to see when
hollywood will bottom out. They just don’t have enough new blood in the industry to come up with fresh ideas.

Posted by on 01/08/06 at 12:42 AM from United States

Oliver Stone?  Knowing him the movie won’t even feature arab hijackers.  It will probably feature one of the non official conspiracy theories.

Are those two things really mutualy exclusive? You can believe Hitler is the definition of scum but still read an article about his psychology or try and understand what made him do what he did

Posted by West Virginia Rebel on 01/08/06 at 05:29 AM from United States

Speaking of which, it’s intersting to note that most of history’s tyrants-from Napoleon to Hitler to Stalin to the shrimp who’s currently running Iran-were short and/or had some kind of physical deformity or ailment. They also tended to be artistic or otherwise creative failures and had abusive parents. It’s all about overcompensation and revenge against their fathers carried to its extreme.

Posted by West Virginia Rebel on 01/08/06 at 05:32 AM from United States

P.S. It’s been noted that in Hitler’s paintings (the ones he did in art school) people are portrayed as objects, like the buildings and other scenery. He doesn’t portray them as having emotion; they’re like statues.

Posted by InsipiD on 01/08/06 at 05:55 AM from United States

It would be good if it had the song “America, Fuck Yeah” from Team America.  Somehow, I doubt that would happen.

Posted by on 01/08/06 at 06:54 AM from Canada

Maybe they’ll go with the conspiracy theory that a warplane shot down that plane?  I’ve heard Americans who argue this theory.  Of course, I’m as shocked by that as they are by me (conservative Canadian).  I remember having a conversation with a US liberal and I was defending the Iraq invasion and denying the stupid conspiracy theories surrounding 9/11.

Maybe in this movie will strike that balance between the tragedy and liberal politics they’ll use the official account of 9/11 but make the president a pacifist gay republican.  This president will show the world the way and how things should have been done by capturing Bin Laden while personally delivering care packages to Afghanistan and Iraq.  At this point, the people the will rise up in love and over throw the repressive regimes with sit-ins and protests.  Then democracy will be had by all.

The End

p.s. Please disregard the ending of this story, I think much like Hollywood, I was having an acid flash back.

Posted by on 01/08/06 at 07:02 AM from United States

If you ever get someone starting to spout off all the 9/11 conspiracies a good place to send them is popular mechanics.  They debunked all those claims, such as the military plane shooting flight 93.

A Very Good Read

Just reading this and seeing the conspiracies they take on makes you ask how in the hell anyone out there could believe them in the first place.

Were you one of the ones who got suckered in by Tarantino’s name?  I’d bet he didn’t have anything to do with the production - just got paid a “product placement fee” to have his name on the credits.

I don’t know.  They have all the same shit there that they do here.  Maybe some aboriginal or Maori artwork?  You can get wool stuff down there that’s really cool, boots and jackets and stuff made from sheepskin, finest in the world.  Apart from maybe something like that, the stuff you get there is pretty much the same as here.  I know when I travel I always try to get a piece of local artwork.  I’ve got stuff from China and Thailand and Australia and every other place I’ve been decorating my walls, looks really really cool.

Dude, are you serious?  I saw it last night and fucking loved it.  A great slasher film in the tradition of great slasher films.  Hot, naked chicks, and mindless, obscene violence.  Tons of gore, great suspense, creepy people, the works.  It’s not high art in any sense of the word, but it was a hell of a lot of fun.

Were you one of the ones who got suckered in by Tarantino’s name?  I’d bet he didn’t have anything to do with the production - just got paid a “product placement fee” to have his name on the credits.

He’s an “executive producer”.  That means that he was involved in getting the film into the studio, putting people together, giving the film some muscle by attaching his name to it.  He’s also a frothing egomaniac, and likes his name prominently displayed on everything he is involved with.  But I don’t feel like I got suckered in at all, I think that Tarantino likes good slasher flicks as much as anyone, and if he was willing to put his name to it then it was probably pretty good.  I wasn’t disappointed.

Lee,being an exec producer also can mean you had absolutely nothing to do with the production of the movie.he aslo has his name attached to another piece of crap coming out around now so i figured he justed needed some christmas, sorry i mean winter break, money.just an overblown, extremely lucky ex-video store clerk.

This is the same director who did The Bourne Supremacy. If that doesn’t ring any liberal hollywood bells, then something is wrong with you.

Posted by on 01/09/06 at 02:33 PM from United States

Exec producer usually means they fronted the money for the production.  In doing so, some exert control on the creative aspect of the film.  No idea what QT did though.

You are correct, sir!

Tarantino is unto film-making as dadaism is unto art.
