Right Thinking From The Left Coast
"To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing,

Dance For Me, Boy

What’s that, Massah?  You done said some things that you done shouldn’t a done, and now you needs me to go out and saves yo’ behind?  Why, no problem, Massah, I sho’ be good at that!

Sen. Barack Obama and other black Democrats are defending Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s description of the House of Representatives as a “plantation.” … Obama said Wednesday he felt her choice of words referred to a “consolidation of power” in Washington that squeezes out the voters.

The Illinois senator told CNN’s “American Morning” he believed that Clinton was merely expressing concern that special interests play such a large role in writing legislation that “the ordinary voter and even members of Congress who aren’t in the majority party don’t have much input.”

“There’s been a consolidation of power by the Republican Congress and this White House in which, if you are the ordinary voter, you don’t have access,” Obama said. “That should be a source of concern for all of us.”

Say, Massah, I’s been wonderin’.  I sho’ would like an extra piece’a cornbread with my supper at night, I gets powerful hungry.  Do y’thinks I might be able to gets me another piece, please Massah?  I done got up and did my shuck and jive in front’a them cameras, just likes you asked.  I sho’ would loves me another piece’a cornbread, Massah!  Please, Massah?  Hello?

if you are the ordinary voter, you don’t have access

Damn straight, I remeber all those times during the previous presidency when I could walk right into the Oval Office, grab a 40 and shout at my homey Bill.  And all the Democratic Senators and I would shoot pool and eat hot wings and tell em whta’s up.

Access, sure there’s always access for the ordinary voter.

After all, when I think of plantations, consolidation of power is the first thing that I think of.

If you think that there’s consolidation of power under the GOP, just imagine what it would be like with the Dems in charge.

And does anyone remember what it was like the last time that the Dems held all three “branches”? We were almost the supporters of government-run health care under Billary. The time before that? Double-digit stagflation, gas prices spiking to all all-time historic high (based on real dollars) and terrorists invading our embassies to hold hostages while Jimmeh the rabbit-killer played his “malaise” fiddle and took out all the hot water heaters from govmint buildings. Yeah, gotta git me s’more o’ dat!

Why sho’ ‘nuff, Miz Clinton. I’d be right proud an’ honored to be yo’ house boy. And if’n y’all gets elected an’ goes back to the big house, I’s do everything I can to gets mah people to helps you. Yessuh! Y’all knows we can’t do nothin’ for without th’ white man. I sure is glad y’all is lookin’ out for mah people.

Lovely.  I think this just reemphasizes where the “plantation” really is-- it’s the DNC.  When one of their “Mastahs” goes out and tries to rally the black vote, they paint them as “marginalized"-- which is odd, as they’ve been represented by primarily black leaders in state and local government.  So it’s really the black leaders crackin’ the whip, so to speak, on the black neighborhoods to make sure they vote for the very people who are marginalizing them for a vote.

And now Barak’s just gone and sold his people down the river, so to speak.  Flippin’ A.  I’m not surprised tho.

BTW, Hillary said all this standing next to Rev. Al.  So don’t tell me she was talking to the “underrepresented voter.”

Odd, when I hear someone talk of the plantation, I think of white slaveowners with a whip......

Now you’re a racist for saying that because Obama is black and a Democrat.  Don’t you know you’re only allowed to say that about Black Republicans?

What a bunch of whiny cunt bastards. Gee whiz, the fucking MINORITY party doesn’t have as much say or access in the govt? NO FUCKING WAY! I never knew it was like that. Next thing you’ll be telling me that the party that wins elections should actually get to govern!

As for “ordinary voters” having no access....we sure do. Every year we have these things that are called elections (elekshuns for those going to public school) where we have this novel concept called “voting”

You’re right....I think I’ll atone by throwing some Oreos at Condi Rice

I’m really pissed about this:

“There’s been a consolidation of power by the Republican Congress and this White House in which, if you are the ordinary voter, you don’t have access,” Obama said

First, I find out that, as a Jew, I control the media, the financial institutions and I occupy the White House, yet I can’t seem to get any benefits from all of this control.  Now I find that as a Republican, I am part of the party that has conolidated power in Congress and the White House and AGAIN, I don’t seem to have any more control over anything than someone who isn’t a Republican.

When am I going to get the damn perks of being part of these conspiracies?

It all reminds me of an old joke from the Soviet Union...An old and poor Jewish man is living in a small farming village where the newspapers are posted in the town square for everyone to read.  Every day the Jew goes to the square to read alongside everyone else and every day he sees stories about how the Jews are destroying the country, how the Jews are responsible for all evil, etc.  One day another villager stops the Jew and asks why he comes to read these stories.  The Jew responds “Because I like to see how powerful I am.”

Except you’re forgetting that when a democrat wins an election by the electoral college instead of popular vote “that” is a mandate...if a “repub” wins the electoral college than that is empirical evidence of a “fascist state” which can only lead to queers being thrown into “ovens” and mandatory prayer in school.  Don’cha know????

Posted by Drumwaster on 01/18/06 at 09:54 PM from United States

I wonder what the lowest percentage of popular vote required in order to win in the electoral college would be?

Clinton won in ‘92 with only 43%.

Lincoln won with 39.8%.

John Quincy Adams won in 1824 winning only 30.9% of the popular vote (coming in 2nd), only 32.2% of the Electoral vote (again coming in 2nd), and 13 of 24 votes in the House of Representatives.

But how low can an ultimately successful candidate go and still win?

at work one day, we were bullshitting back and forth about politics… one guy says this: “i have to vote democrat. that’s what black people do.” when i pressed him on issues, he sounded very republican… that about sums it up for me…

i should also mention he thought my idea of watching interracial porn to celebrate MLK Day was a GREAT idea and asked me for copies of what i was ‘viewing’…

Isn’t a plantation just a large farm, but with slaves? Hillary did not say Congress is being run like a large farm. She is saying they oppress blacks like slavery did. This is totally absurd, of course. But that’s why she chose those words.

Posted by on 01/19/06 at 12:53 AM from United States

SoCal has this string of restaurants named Souplantation. That’s always seemed inappropriate. Kind of like those old Sambo restaurants.

Posted by Aaron - Free Will on 01/19/06 at 01:11 AM from United States

Actually, there’s a restaurant here in western NY called “The Plantation House”. Quite pricey.

How deplorable of Obama. How a self-respecting black man could defend such deplorable comments, equating plantation slavery with the spineless and corrupt republican congress, is beyond me. I just don’t get out people can even vote democrat for democrats. I can understand people holding out for republicans (I stopped a while ago) but not for democrats.

Posted by The Contrarian on 01/19/06 at 10:53 PM from United States

hmm...that last line should read “I don’t get how people can even vote for democrats,”
