All Opposed?  “Ney”
by Lee

Just in time for the election, another Republican pleads guilty to corruption.

Rep. Bob Ney pleaded guilty Friday to bribery charges stemming from the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling investigation.

The Ohio Republican was the first member of Congress convicted in the scandal that has tainted the White House as well as Capitol Hill. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Ney confessed his wrongdoing before U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle in a federal courthouse a few blocks distant from the Capitol, where until recently he wielded a chairman’s gavel.

The Ohio Republican did not speak to reporters as he made his way into the courthouse. It was his first public appearance since entering an alcohol treatment program last month.

Inside the courtroom, Huvelle spent nearly a half-hour asking the congressman whether he understood the charges and agreed that he had taken money, gifts and favors in return for official actions on behalf of Abramoff and his clients.

At the end she asked him how he pleaded to the conspiracy count, he replied, “I plead guilty your honor.”

Asked how he pleaded to the count of false statements, he replied, “I plead guilty, your honor.”

Mark Touhey, Ney’s lawyer, told the judge the congressman would resign from office before sentencing on January 19. His term in Congress expires before then, though, at noon on January 3.

This election is going to be insane.  It keeps going back and forth, one way and the other.  First Foley hurt the Republicans, then the Nork nuke test helped them.  Then something else hurts them, then something hurts the Democrats.  Now this.  It’s like watching a political tennis match.

I’m almost to the point of wanting the Democrats to take back the Congress.  At least you pretty much know they’re screwing you.  I’m counted among those they consider “rich” so the Democrats tell me directly they’re gonna stick it to me.  At this point I’m thinking that’s preferable to the Republican method of telling me they’re for small government and less spending as they have their hands in my pockets and in each other’s pockets.

I always find it somewhat worrying that Republicans seemed to be helped by other countries making beligerant acts. Sort of gives them no real desire to actually do anything about them.

Seems that a “dirty” land deal has surfaced implicating Harry Reid in shady dealings...coincidence?  I think not…

Why is this guy being allowed to retain his seat until he can “resign”? Shouldn’t the Republican leadership throw his ass out on ethical principle? ... ah… never mind… “ethical principle” isn’t something the current Republican leadership has much of these days.

Wow, so this makes 2 Rep’s to enter into rehab. (Him and Foley). I’m noticing a pattern here, either people like to scapegoat alcohol, or drinking alcohol makes people pedophiles, and/or corrupt. Maybe we should ban it?

Score another point for Miss Mary Jane.

Why not? It worked so well last time, after all.

Reminds me of the old adage that rich people vote conservative and poor people vote socialist - therefore socialists try to make as many people as poor as possible, and conservatives try to make as many people as rich as possible.

An AP story says that GOP lawmakers will make Ney give up his seat if he doesn’t resign.

Keep those resignation speeches handy, guys...more of you may need them soon…

That was sarcasm. But good point none the less. Prohibition doesn’t work. I learned about all that back when I was a libertarian.

Because prohibition doesn’t work, score yet ANOTHER point for Marijuana.

Thanks, Orpheus!
