START to expire.

It looks like despite the fact that the START treaty is about to expire at midnight tonight without a replacement agreement, that the Russians and the Obama admin have a tentative agreement to stick to it. While this is no loner a big deal these days - the Russians win big getting rid of all their older and crappy missiles that from what reports were leaked by our people would be just as likely to blow up right at launch time if not launc at all with this deal anyway - it is nice to see that Obama and his crew are not getting snowed on this issue as they have on practically everything else. At least not yet, or obviously.

Fundraiser 2009 - June is donatin’ month!
by JimK

(This post will stay sticky for a week, please scroll down for new posts)

I thought I would take a sec to remind everyone about the server drive and explain a couple of things. Bulk of the post is below the fold to as not to clutter up the front page too much…

Quick Apartment Bleg

I’m going to go out on a limb and tap into the body of collective wisdom at RTFLC.

Three months ago, I moved into a new apartment downtown, third floor, top of the building I’m on. At that time, I was promised verbally (by a broadly trustworthy guy) that the linoleum in my bathroom would be replaced in about a week. A week turned into two, three, and now it’s been three months. Last time I asked was a month ago, and I was told that his son (the repair guy) was working in another building and would be done soon. Obviously, at this point, he’s pretty much put it aside entirely, but the linoleum really does need replacing: there’s a spot where it’s literally held together with a piece of duct tape. Prior tenants clearly weren’t cautious about water.

This morning, I woke up and went into the kitchen to make some chili mac (the breakfast of champions), and when I looked down, realized that I was looking at a dying, adult roach on the kitchen floor, lying on its back kicking. This is not only disgusting, it’s also unacceptably unsanitary under NYS law to allow an ongoing infestation. I’m on the third floor, so an adult roach is unlikely to just be a stray from outside, though I’ve never seen any others or any signs of a roach presence. I suspect that it either came in from a nearby apartment via the hallway (the outer door has a substantial gap to the hallway) or through the adjoining wall to the next apartment, where I get the impression they live in a way that might be conducive to roaches. (Unlike in NYC, roaches are not a common problem in Binghamton or upstate NY in general, so you generally really have to be doing something awful to develop a problem.)

I think it’s probably best at this point to put both of my complaints in writing. I also need him to treat the entire building for the roaches, or else it won’t do any good. Anybody have any experience making these particular kinds of complaints to landlords, in a way that gets action without creating ill will?

Car guys: halp!
by JimK

Small bleg here...Anyone here know about cars? I have a 1992 Taurus (2.9 ltr v6), that is making a loud, sputtering sharp noise once the engine has been running for a minute or two.  Always takes a couple minutes to start, and stays steady and loud at at the same basic intensity no matter how much gas you give it.  It *seems* to be coming from the top of the engine, but that could just be deceptive sound.  It is definitely coming from the engine compartment somewhere and not under the car or from the back.  It does sound like an exhaust leak, and it has been six years since anyone has looked at that exhaust system.  Just want to know what direction to nudge the mechanic is so I don’t get burned when I take it in.

Any ideas?

Help Wanted
by Lee

I’m looking for a solid GOP conservative to balance out the posts here.  You don’t have to be a fundie or anything like that, you just have to be someone who thinks that it’s a mistake to vote for anything other than GOP, and that you generlly agree with what the GOP does.  If this is the case, send me and tell me who you are, with a general synopsis of what your beliefs are.  I’ll pick the best applicant based on what you write.  (And yes, you will be judged on your writing abilities.)

Sounds like something you’d be interested in?  Hit that email button.

Ping!  Fundraiser reminder
by JimK

First of all, thank you SO much to every person that has already donated to the server fund.  Some of you did it anonymously, and some of you let me know.  Either way is cool, but those of you who let me know who you are...I’m trying to figure out something cool with which I can thank you.  At the very least I will address each of you individually, as I have developed at least that much class over the years. Well...almost.

As I said the last time, if you think we’re worth a few bucks...please hit the tip jar.  It’s not an emergency, it’s just a bit of a rough patch and this server never gets cheaper.  It never gets more expensive, thankfully, but it never gets cheaper.

All we’re asking for is a small contribution.  Think of it like buying us a pizza...or a couple of microbrews.  Just a few bucks to get the monkey called Softlayer (our hosting provider) off our backs.

It’s fundraising time…
by JimK

JimK here…

People, you have no idea how little I want to write this post.  I have been putting it off forever, but numbers are numbers, and numbers don’t lie.  My numbers are telling me that I need to once again ask for the support and generosity of the readers of the blogs on our server.

If you read anything by me, Lee, any of the guys at MOA, Moorewatch or Right-Thinking or anyone else we host, and you think we’re worth a few bucks...please hit the tip jar.  It’s not an emergency, no one is dying, no one is losing their house, although our house is part of it - our tax bill went up because our house is worth more, so our mortgage escrow is short and you homeowners know what that means!  Monkeys on backs.

All we’re asking for is a small contribution.  Think of it like buying us a pizza...or a couple of microbrews.  Just a few bucks to get the monkey called Softlayer (our hosting provider) off our backs.

Help Me Help You
by Lee

Hey, you guys wanna help out the blog?  At least once a day click on all the Blogads.  This generates revenue which is used by Jim and I to pay for the site.  Blogads have been kinda sparse for about six months but we’ve gotten three good ones lately.  The higher the number of clicks they receive the better the chances that I’ll get more ads, which in turn gives you the sites to visit.  So if you like visiting this blog, Lee In China, Right Thoughts, Made of Awesome, Moorewatch, and others, start your fingers clicking.

Who knows, you might end up at a site with something you’d actually be interested in.

Link Whore
by Lee

Someone put my post about KFC and German cock up at Digg.  If you’ve got a Digg membership, pop on over and Digg it.  And if you don’t have a Digg account, they take about 30 seconds to set up.

Font Bleg
by Lee

So I’m trying to come up with a cool header graphic for the new Lee In China site, and I need one of those fonts which is regular English characters but looks like it’s written in Asian calligraphy.  You know, the type of writing you see in the signs on really bad Chinese restaurants.

This should be just stupid and tacky enough to work perfectly with the idea I’ve come up with.  Anyone got one lying around?  I’m using a Mac, so bonus points if it’s a Mac font, but I’m pretty sure any postscript font will work, and if it’s a TrueType or OpenType or one of the other 98 trillion font specs out there I should be able to figure out some way to get it to work.

Capitalism Plug
by Lee

If you or someone you know collects Swatch Watches, I’ve got a set of 8 that I’m selling.  They’re about 15 years old, and one or two of them have become quote collectible.  You can see the link here.

Book Bleg
by Lee

As you guys know I’m a voracious reader.  Since the ChiComs are not exactly known for their freedom of the press (when I lived in Shanghai the only English book I could find that was worth reading was Sun Tzu’s The Art of War) I have decided to stock up on books before I leave.  I’m really interested in reading about the Civil War.  Can anyone recommend a comprehensive, phone book-sized tome which I might find interesting?  I’ve already loaded up on big, thick books—Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, that sort of thing—and I’d love on on the Civil War.

There are tons of books to choose from.  Anyone got a recommendation?
