Tapping Trump

So this happened:

President Trump on Saturday angrily accused former president Barack Obama of orchestrating a “Nixon/Watergate” plot to tap the phones at his Trump Tower headquarters last fall in the run-up to the election.

While citing no evidence to support his explosive allegation, Trump said in a series of four tweets sent Saturday morning that Obama was “wire tapping” his New York offices before the election in a move he compared to McCarthyism. “Bad (or sick) guy!” he said of his predecessor, adding that the surveillance resulted in “nothing found.”

This appears to be a result of internet telephone. Last summer, Louise Mensch revealed that the FBI (not Obama) has sought a FISA warrant to investigate members of Trump’s team’s ties to the Russians (this was after it was discovered that a server in Trump tower was communicating with Russian banks). The FISA Court rejected the initial warrant, then granted one more narrowly focused on four members of the Trump team. These details have been reported on many times. A few days ago, Mark Levin did one of his connect-the-dots pieces alleging a conspiracy to derail Trump. It showed up today on Breitbart and thus went into Trump’s brain.

If that’s all there is to it, Trump is being incredibly stupid here because he is reminding the public that his campaign staff were under investigation for espionage owing to credible accusations that they were working with the Russians to enable Trump’s election. If there’s more, then Trump needs to provide the evidence because warrantless wiretapping by Obama would indeed be a gigantic political scandal.

And if it is true, then what the Hades was Obama thinking?

Do you really have to ask that after the past 8 years WVR? Oh, the narrative now was that they were worried Trump was working with the Russians! That is a fucking lie – the real big lie going on BTW – they have been using to wash away everything illegal and immoral they have been up to. We currently have members of the previous administration actively engaged in undermining the duly elected president because their allegiance is to party and ideology, and not the country or the people. But hey, the problem is Trump…

The important point I think you should see here, Hal, is that Trump now has everyone firmly focused on the fact that his office was wiretapped by the Obama Administration to find evidence of collusion with the Russians.

Presumably, the investigators did all they could to find damning evidence….and they got nothing.  The Obama Administration had every single incentive to thoroughly investigate this matter, had a lot to gain from finding something, and they got NOTHING.

Trump isn’t being stupid by reminding people of the Russian connections.  The press is already doing that every day.  What Trump is doing is making the big story that the federal government has ALREADY investigated this as deeply as they could and found NOTHING.

I think it’s brilliant and it might put this issue to bed once and for all.

You guys seem fixated on this conclusion that the investigation has found nothing.  It is still ongoing.  It has only been going for a few months.  Even Watergate took years to develop into a full scandal.

      It is still ongoing.

Yes, it is, but until they actually find something (then leak it to the NY Times and WaPo, which has been their standard M.O. for all things Trump) quit making shit up, and quit throwing words around like “traitor” and “corruption” when you got nothing (so far) to back it up.

Hal, anti-Trumpers are absolutely never going to understand anything that’s going on for the next few years if they don’t stop just dismissing everything Trump does as dumb or crazy and instead start making an effort to understand WHY he does the things he does.

Democrats are going to keep pushing for more and more investigation into Russia no matter what.  Trump cannot control that.  Trump can control the story though.  He’s really good at doing that with his tweets.  He’s been doing it really successfully since the primaries, if you didn’t notice.

What Trump is trying to do is shape the story in the public’s mind.  From now on, every single time a reporter tries to question Trump or any of his surrogates about Russia, it’s going to go like this:

“How do you respond to these developments in the Russia investigation?”

“It’s garbage.  The Obama Administration went to extremes and wiretapped us and found no evidence of any wrongdoing.  Next.”

It’s now fully in the public consciousness that Obama wiretapped Trump and found nothing, thanks to everyone going nuts over Trump’s tweet.  Your facts and the status of the investigation mean nothing against the public’s inevitable perception that this matter has already been investigated by the Obama Administration and that there was nothing there.

Whether you like it or not, this is the beginning of the end of Trump’s Russia problem as far as the media narrative and public attitude is concerned.  That’s the game Trump is playing and he’s winning it.

I have not thrown around the word traitor. And if I’ve alleged corruption it’s because this Administration IS corrupt, refusing to disclose business interests, refusing to divest and now with multiple Admin members having undisclosed business ties to Russia. Right now, Trump is spending almost every weekend at Mar-A-Lago, where people, include foreign nationals, can get access to him by paying tens of thousands to be a guest there. But you don’t see any problem with that.  Because at least he pisses off the liberals.

Thrill, I see your point, although I doubt Trump is that strategic. This is why my time on liberal blogs is spent arguing with people not to call for treason trials just yet.  I’ve made the same point there: we need an investigation and Trump’s opponents need to be patient and they need to accept it if the investigation finds nothing.  The Left Wing has gone full on crazy. Trip over to a liberal blog and the highest-rated comments are those saying that this is clearly treason and Trump needs to be shot for treason.  It’s insane.

You can doubt Trump’s sense of strategy if you like, but I think those of you who keep underestimating him you do so at your own peril.

He came out of nowhere to win the GOP Primary with only 1/4 of the party really supporting him and the rest running the gamut from not actively hating him to not taking him seriously, he survived numerous gaffes and scandals that would have killed any normal candidate, and he won by campaigning in blue states when experts kept telling us he was wasting his time and was actually in danger of losing red states.  This does sound to me like a guy who knows how to think strategically.

What he’s doing now is eliminating the idea that we even need an investigation.  Yeah, Democrats can keep agitating and holding hearings, but people will tune it out just as they eventually tuned out Benghazi.

This is exactly what Trump wants and what his actions are going to do.

Exactly… For one, the narrative has collapsed now that people ask how they are getting this nonsense they are peddling. Alternatively, the spying on Trump was real and wholly political, and the red scare thing was a cover story hatched after Hillary unexpectedly lost, when it became apparent that Trump, and America, would find out sooner or later what the amount of wholly illegal and despicable shit that had been ordered and done under Obama’s watch, was. And we will find out.

Thrill, I think you might be right. But to be clear, I don’t think Trump is strategic, but his lack of strategy is deliberate and working.

Lets be clear – it’s by no means clear that the Obama admin did wiretap Trump. In fact it’s more than likely that his assertion was bullshit – looking like it came from a Breitbart review of an opinion piece.

But in the messy narrative of public opinion, that assertion is out there. It’s what he’s been doing all the time – “Some people are saying” and all that. And while it may not be true what the “some” people are “saying” it roots itself in the public consciousness. It takes ages to explain the weeds of what’s actually happening, and that doesn’t go past the headline of ‘Obama Wiretapped Trump’.

(By the way, if The President of the United States was certain enough of his assertion to make a public on the record statement, I’d expect him to prosecute this to the full extent of the law. Let’s see if that happens.)

I’m not sure if it’s the end – I guess if it’s all smoke and no fire then it may be. My guess is that there is fire and it will keep producing smoke, so we’ve not heard the end of it.

I don’t think Trump really believes Obama did it, cress.  I certainly don’t think Obama did nor would there be any paper trail to prove it if he did.  Far too dangerous.

Trump said “Obama did it” for emotional impact and simplicity.  He knew what would get the widest possible attention on this.

    Absolutely.

The president of the United States can now just accuse people of shit, even if it’s not true, and even he doesn’t believe it. But it works.
