Trump Fires Yates

A few thoughts on Trump firing Sally Yates, the acting AG.

First, he is well within his rights to do so. The Attorney General answers to the President and, if she won’t obey his instructions, should resign. I have frequently defended politicians who are criticized for legal arguments they made while attorneys general, pointing out that arguing the state’s position is their job, whether they agree with it or not. If Yates didn’t want to defend Trump’s EO, she should have resigned, as Elliott Richardson once did.

That having been said, his statement on the matter is a bit odd, referring to her “betrayal” and trying to argue for the policy. This is politics, not some personality cult. We had enough of that nonsense with the last President. But I guess we’re going to have to get used to these Trump temper tantrums.

Finally, if there is one candidate I hope can be scuttled, it’s Jeff Sessions.

This is doing the rounds on social media

Alex will be really happy about the number of names now crossed off the State Department leaderboard. There is almost no-one left!

This was also interesting, from your link, although there are no supporting links to the key part:

    (5) On Inauguration Day, Trump apparently filed his candidacy for 2020. Beyond being unusual, this opens up the ability for him to start accepting “campaign contributions” right away. Given that a sizable fraction of the campaign funds from the previous cycle were paid directly to the Trump organization in exchange for building leases, etc., at inflated rates, you can assume that those campaign coffers are a mechanism by which US nationals can easily give cash bribes directly to Trump. Non-US nationals can, of course, continue to use Trump’s hotels and other businesses as a way to funnel money to him.

Is it true that campaign donations can be paid straight to the Trump Corporation? How does that work in terms of his own decoupling from the organization?

Where’s Rich? I am wondering what his take is on all of this, after 10 days of the Trump administration?

There seems to be an uprising going on at State from the Obama holdovers. Time for more housecleaning?

I was hoping more of them would take what they think is the principled stance and just resign already, but it looks like they will have to be dragged out the door.

I am sure all the people that defended Obama for going much further than any of his predecessors dreamed of doing, will now be pants shitting that Trump follows that example.

All the Obama shills need to be shown the door. i certainly wouldn’t trust these people not to sabotage things.

I wondered about this statement. Isn’t her job to give the administration unequivocal and unbiased counsel on the legal and constitutional implications of any policy action? In which case, her advice to the WH that she wasn’t sure of the legality or constitutionality of the immigration ban from specific countries becomes very proper .

Wouldn’t the appropriate action from the WH on receipt of that advice have been to release legal argument that it, in fact, was constitutional? It seems to me that the sacking was more aimed at the whole court system itself – support the executive regardless of your own legal views or you are on notice.

How will the administration get any proper constitutional advice if this is the basis on which various AGs are told they have to act? And then even more worrying was the WH directive to the DHS to ignore any rulings from Federal Courts on legality? Essentially, this undermines the power of the courts to enforce decisions.

Very worrying…. although I am sure Alex can explain it away.

Yes, it is worrying that Trump didn’t run this through DOJ first. Her job is to advise.  But I think she stepped beyond those boundaries when she said she wouldn’t enforce the law.

You think? Just because enforcing laws was left to the whims of the administration and its cronies  during the Obama years doesn’t make it the way laws should be enforced. I hope the door didn’t hit her on the way out.

I will be happy when they are all gone. And not just at state. Its time for a major house cleaning.

I heard she got hundreds of job offers within hours…

Man, am I glad for her! Let me guess? Academia or some non-profit leftist shit that adds no value whatsoever to anything or everyone but the connected leftists? Unlike you leftists I don’t want people I disagree with to be destroyed and unable to earn a living. I just want them away from power.

The big win here however is that she is out of government, and I hope there are many more of these people that will be looking for jobs elsewhere (and finding them too).

Sorry, you’re both wrong. It’s Xi Jinping.

    Oh the irony..

Stogy nominates one of the worlds most effective tyrants. At least CM picked someone that supposedly heads a country where they were democratically elected and they have some modicum of freedom.

Bwhahahahaha! Yeah, I so clearly support Xi Jinping as leader of the free world.

Considering what leftists beliefs, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if you did.

Why would I bother? My guess is it is some fake news bashing Trump on his stance on China.
