Friday Quick Hits

A few stories I haven’t gotten time for full blog posts on:

  • I kind of like Bernie Sanders as a candidate. Not because I agree with him on anything — I don’t. And not because I’d vote for him — I wouldn’t. I like him out there because at least he’s honest about what he thinks. I prefer an honest socialist over whatever dumbed down pap Clinton is selling while pretending to be our friend. This week, someone dug up a 1972 article he wrote about how men fantasize about abusing women and women fantasize about being raped. The conservative critics are right: this would be a *huge* deal is a Republican had written it. On the other hand, it was written 43 years ago and is so incoherent, I have to believe that Sanders wrote it on a roll of toilet paper while writhing on a bathroom floor in the midst of a bad LSD trip.
  • Texas has been on the receiving end of some terrible rains and floods recently. The cause, according to the media, is global warming. This was the same global warming that was causing droughts three years ago. Look, I accept that global warming is real, but this is getting ridiculous. Not everything is a result of global warming. I’m pretty sure we had weather before global warming. And I’m pretty sure we’ll continue to have it after global warming is solved. Maybe global warming will make torrential rains more likely, but if so it will mean something like a few extra floods a decade.
  • Nebraska became the first red state to abolish the death penalty, overriding the governor’s veto. While I’m not quite anti-capital punishment, I’m fine with this. The death penalty isn’t worth the trouble and expense. And Nebraska hasn’t executed anyone in 18 years anyway.
  • Dennis Hastert is being prosecuted for structuring and lying to investigators as he was paying hush money to someone. You can read Ken White about how these charges are basically made up. It’s likely being pursued because the statute of limitations has run out on what he did do. Illegal leaks indicate he sexually abused a student while he was a wrestling coach. I deplore the fed’s tendency to make up crimes. That doesn’t change Haster’s status as a scumbag if these allegations are true.
  • This week’s must-read is from Laura Kipnis a liberal feminist professor who found herself at the center of a Title IX inquisition because she had the temerity to question the narrative the sexual paranoia our college campuses are caving into.

Texas has been on the receiving end of some terrible rains and floods recently. The cause, according to the media, is global warming. Wow Hal, you really are regressing on climate change. That’s a poor summary.

Odd idea, perhaps the planet’s climate is actually driven by that star only 93M miles away, and not the ass end of your Prius…

Wow Hal, you really are regressing on climate change. That’s a poor summary.

Really? I’ve always said that the secondary and tertiary effects of global warming are difficult to pin down, if not impossible. When we had the year of bad hurricanes, we were told that global warming was causing it. But it turned out to be a one year spike. Since then, the number of storms has remained flat (skeptical science shows a ten year running average which is a fancy way of spreading out a few bad years over many). We’re in the midst of a hurricane drought.  Maybe global warming will make hurricanes more common but the evidence simply isn’t there.

The tendency to latch onto Every. Single. Weather. Event. as “proof” of global warming is one of the worst tendencies on the global warming side.  It undermines the entire case.  It’s make them look ridiculous. And it’s not based on science.  The global warming predictions concern long-term trends and statistics.  We’d get hot summers anyway; we’ll just get the more often.  We’ll still get cold winters; we’ll just get them less often.  We’d get hurricanes anyway; we just might get a few more over the decades.  Floods always happen; we just might get more.

I don’t think calling them out on this garbage represent “regression”.  It’s holding my side to the same standards of honest debate I hold the other side.

Your example article doesn’t reflect your complaint. At all. It seems reasonable. Where are all your example articles? And are you calling out the media or scientists? What are your thoughts on elected Republican stances on climate change (eg those mentioned in your example – are they reasonable or ideological and ignorant?). Will there be a single Presidential primary challenger who even acknowledges climate change as an issue? Is that not slightly more concerning as someone who will presumably be voting for one of them?

I guess we just don’t see you holding “the other side to account” here anymore because the topic is unable to be discussed. The impression is that your issues are just with “your” side.

Is it not somewhat concerning to you that that a Republican presidential candidate cannot accept climate science and run a viable primary campaign? I mean WTF? How do you reconcile that with what you know? How do you get past clear denial of science?

CM, you are so fucking stupid.  I seriously wonder how you manage to walk and breathe at the same time without forgetting how to do one or the other.

When you have some actual information to back up even one of your statements it will be a day of wonders.

The problem with CM is that he believes, or at least needs to convince us that he believes, in the discredited shit the AGW cultists peddle. He firmly believes that we should accept as evidence, as a religious fanatic demands non-believers accept his cult’s preaching, and that we are the boors and idiots for not just accepting the snake oil he is selling. No amount of evidence, fact, or logic will instill any doubt in him. After all, the cult’s preachings promise that exact utopian collectivist paradise he believes bloated government can deliver, so he is willing to sell his soul to further that agenda.

But hey, he is trying to have an honest discussion with us rubes, and we are just to stupid to get his genius or have an honest discussion. After all, we refuse to accept the “scientific consensus” and we remain stuck on that antiquated scientific principle thing. I mean why do you want to waste time with a principle that states that hypotheses, once made, especially when modeled on falsified data and rigged computer models that have never accurately predicted anything and smack of not just exaggeration, but of ridiculous apocalyptic religious ferver, by the nature that they failed, need to be discarded or send back to the drawing board. Especially when you can just claim consensus and demand we barrel on with the ideological solution because “deniers!”.

Spare us your ability to “happily support” your religious beliefs. Especially when facts, logic, and truth are not part of the discussion you want to have. People like you have done more damage to science than the fucking catholic church in the dark ages.

Where is yours? For the millionth time, where is it? Why do you keep it hidden away behind accusations? Why are accusations all you ever have?

After all, the cult’s preachings promise that exact utopian collectivist paradise he believes bloated government can deliver, so he is willing to sell his soul to further that agenda.

Except I don’t believe in that at all. Collectivism is never going to be any kind of paradise. Unfortunately your religion requires you to invent what other people think. That is how backwards it is.

But hey, he is trying to have an honest discussion with us rubes, and we are just to stupid to get his genius or have an honest discussion.

Nope, was asking Hal some questions. See above. It’s all there in black and white. Making shit up isn’t going to work. I’ve had many honest discussions with “rubes” (your term) about climate change, just not here.

Especially when you can just claim consensus and demand we barrel on with the ideological solution because “deniers!”.

Not even close. Again, how do you think you’re going to get anywhere just making shit up?

Spare us your ability to “happily support” your religious beliefs.

I thought I’d give SO yet another opportunity to fail spectacularly to back up his accusations. He’s pretty reliable on that front, just like you.

Especially when facts, logic, and truth are not part of the discussion you want to have.

Perhaps you should put that mirror down for once Alex. What have I said in this thread which is inconsistent with “facts, logic and truth”? Where are all your facts?

Same old Alex: zero substance and completely reliance on making shit up and personal abuse.

Were you looking in the mirror before you wasted all our time with that idiotic comment?

Don’t bother.  I am done wasting my time with you and only plan to respond to you with insults. Anything less is a disservice to the universe.

I am done wasting my time with you and only plan to respond to you with insults.

But that’s all you were doing anyway. Because it’s clearly all you have. Yet again I ask for substance to back up your accusations and claims, and yet again you can’t do it.
