Well, the site went tits up. I posted comments on two separate threads, neither showed up in the comments section. I imagine everyone is now unable to post comments. Thus, we find ourselves adrift.

“What in Hell goes on in New York?”

Looks like we are back in business, what the hell happened?

I reactivate Jetpack earlier today, which comes with a lot of useful tools. But it seems like its comment tools are incompatible with something else on the blog.  Oddly, I could still comment but it appears to have blocked everyone else. So I turned off Jetpack’s comments module.

Santino, did you remember your password or did you get an e-mail from the blog?  I think the problem right now is administrative e-mails aren’t going out.  Not sure how to fix that.

Sorry Hal, I totally fucked up on the login.  On the “old” site I logged in with my email address.  Which is what I was trying to do on the updated site.  I finally realized that I have to login with my user name now.  My bad!

I exist I just can’t devote any time to this. I’m trying to fix things so I can hand it off.

Admin emails are def. broken and I need to see why. Also, someone needs to pick who is the admin that deals with those emails (the system will send certain things to the admin) – Gimme a name and an email to plug in after I find out why it;s so broken.

Also – I have backed up the server entirely and am being forced by the host to upgrade the back end. So…be ready for the whole server to go down at some point. Hopefully it;s as easy a process as they claim.

Correction: I thought I backed up the server. The job failed and I don’t knwo why. JESUS FUCK I HATE BLOG SOFTWARE AND SERVERS AND THE FUCKING INTERNET

Jim, you can go ahead and set my up as admin for e-mail purposes.  Because of my job, I am online constantly.

The scary thing about the software is that wordpress is actually pretty good as blog software goes.  I had different software at my own site and lost a couple of years of blogging when I had a spam event horizon.

I will get on it tomorrow. The great news is, I got the backup, so if this all goes tits up, we have a copy of the entire server as of 12:55 PM today. :)

Two things: 1) I’ve enabled the sharing buttons so that people can easily share our posts on FB or whatever; 2) do we want to create a RTFLC page on FB?  I’m tempted but worry that the low number of fans might become embarrassing.

    Two things:

    1) We need to dress up our home page, more “buttons” below the banner would be nice. A “Readers Rants” button, a “contact” button, a “donate” button,  and a PM button for private messaging. Stuff on the edges, we could make a little scratch with advertising, all sites do it, pay for the server and lend a little credibility. We need posts to be identified by author. I also liked the window we used to have on the right with random rotating witticisms, stuff from Reagan, Buckley, Churchill, Will Rogers, even Groucho Marx, sayings that remind us what side we are on.

    2) Any progress on getting our new authors on board with writing privileges? This and removing the bugs from the new registration process should be job one.

I’m working on these things when I can.  To get the author names on posts is my priority right now but it seems to involve editing the CSS file for the page (the template for the blog), which I am very hesitant to do for fear of fucking it up.  I might try a new theme but I think I’m basically going to have to take a crash course in CSS to do all those things.  I’m tinkering around the edges so you should start to see improvements at some point.  I hope.

Xetrov, I have just upgraded your user status to “author”.  This should give you the ability to write posts.  If you click on the site admin page on the right, it should bring you to the main writing page.  Let me know if this works for you and draft a test post (just save it, don’t publish it) so I can see if it’s working.  Let me know if you have any questions.  The page should look a lot like the comments page.

Rich, one safeguard just in case I break something very badly. If you look on the list of user on the pages, you’ll find my comcast e-mail address.  If things go bonkers, contact me there and let me know.

I’m playing with the background color a bit.  Let me know when I hit one that doesn’t suck (this one sucks slightly less).

The thing that is throweing me is why the damn system won’t email new users for registration. It sends the admin email that tells me a new user has registered, but the user doesn’t get the confirmation email. If any WordPress folk have the foggiest idea what could be causing that please throw your ideas at me

Also, I was able to get the post’s author name in there for you. It’s adding one line of php to the “content.php” file in the template.

    by  < ? php the_author() ;  ? >

Imagine that line without all the weird spaces. If you decide to change templates you might have to add the line to the new one.

Ah, I was changing that at the same time, doing the exact same fix! I was staring at that line of code for about half an hour trying to figure out why it wasn’t working without realizing that you had just changed it. :)

The thing that is throweing me is why the damn system won’t email new users for registration. It sends the admin email that tells me a new user has registered, but theuser doesn’t get the confirmation email.

I don’t know if this would help (or even doable) but is there a way to turn off that feature, by pass it?

When a new member registers, it goes to admin, I would be glad to moderate this for the blog, send the notification to my email, I will contact him (or her) find out if it is a real person, than approve him on the spot. This way he gets his own password, nothing to change, and no WordPress roadblock of not sending confirmation emails.

Just to make sure, since there are several users with similar names, the ID I should give author privileges to is “ilovecress”?
