Toward a European War

Over the last week, Russia has been slowly dropping the pretense and invading the Ukraine with active troops, tanks and artillery pieces. Many of these soldiers, as with the earlier incursion into the crimea, are pretending to be rebels, which is technically a war crime.

As has been pointed out, the Ukraine is not the limit of Putin’s ambitions. He has claimed that he will rescue all ethnic Russians who are “threatened” which means the baltic states and Poland could be on their target list.

The West is finally responding. The plan is to deploy troops to the new NATO bases in Eastern Europe as well as to provide military aide to the Ukraine. I would suggest that reviving missile defense would be another good step.

This sets up the potential for a wider war. But it’s something we are obligated to do under the NATO treaty. We’ll just have to hope that the prospect of tangling with an actual military force is enough to give Putin some pause.

    From the article

“But the issue of permanent Nato bases in east Europe is divisive. The French, Italians and Spanish are opposed while the Americans and British are supportive of the eastern European demands. The Germans, said a Nato official, were sitting on the fence, wary of provoking Russia.”

This really isn’t any different than before. What we need to do is get the hell out of NATO. If we get into a hot war with Russia, I can guarantee you a good amount, if not most of the Western Europe populace will be pulling for Russia. Read the comments in that article, half the people think this whole Russian event is a plot by us to expand NATO and our bloated imperialistic ego. We can no longer afford to be bound to agreements to protect whack jobs across the pond. Yeah it’s comments on a news story, but come on I think it’s pretty much an accurate reflection of the whole. We need to realize our “allies” are not really allies but more less acquaintances. Personally I could give two shits if Russia rides roughshod over most of that continent. It’s not our problem, nor should it become our problem and we need to abandon outdated agreements that will make it our problem. We need to look out for number one and that’s it, and the countries over there can look out for themselves as they see fit. If Eastern Europe is asking for some assistance, fine. Close the western bases, and let Putin know we’re only concerned about a few eastern countries, I’m sure he’d be fine with that, and that’s a good diplomatic solution the diplomacy mavens overseas could be proud of.

PLEASE DON’T LEAVE NATO !!! wtf bra!?

This is half the fault of half your voting population for voting bloody Obama in in the first place! His actions predictably and precisely led to this clusterfuck. Just as his actions predictably and precisely led to the current clusterfuck in the Middle Eas.. hey, a pattern here. But don’t think some Americans and certain current sitting Presidents don’t have responsibility here.

There are a lot, sadly, of Right Wingers who are duped by Putin and it astounds me somewhat. They honestly think he’s an innocent guy just trying to look after his country…

Agree Poosh. This is on Obama and Clinton. The crisis in the Ukraine has been building for a long time and they stood around like toilet with the lids up.

Remember that the next time these morons tell you they will do a better job. I warned people that told me Boosh was an idiot that democrats have always been worse on foreign policy, and that what we would get was a Cartereque replay from these idiots. What’s going on right now makes the problems of the Carter years look like peanuts. Calling the shit the progtards have done “Amateur hour foreign policy” is an insult to foreign policy and amatuers.

You can’t make this level of stupid shit up.

Actually Poosh, with the exception of that “innocent” word, it is kind of what Putin is doing. He is looking out for his, and one could even pretend, his country’s interests. We can agree or disagree if this is a good or bad thing, but the fact remains that this sort of “invade your neighbor for your own profit” shit would not happen if we had a president that was not drawing lines in the sand and then not doing anything about it when the line was crossed.

Democrats are fucking bad for geopolitics, because they have no basis in reality when they formulate policy. That’s why this administration has pissed on every one of our best ally’s legs and told them it was warm rain, while dropping on its knees to suck our enemy’s cocks. The greedy “I vote for a living” idiots don’t care however that the world is edging closer to catastrophe as long as they get shit paid for by others, and they are in the majority now.

    Sad.

I absolutely LOVE the way Russia is nobly attempting to come to the aid of their “citizens” in these former USSR areas. So let’s see, you could INVADE a bunch of countries, hold them hostage behind an iron curtain for ~30 ears, then release them back to a semi-free status, then reinvade to help your oppressed citizens in these former areas. Nice logic/moral equivocation! You think the Islamic crowd is paying attention to this tactic wrt the rest of Europe and the US?

It’s a pity that the Ukranians and Balts didn’t round up and deport those Russians back in about 1991 or thenabouts. What were they keeping them around for, anyway? Did they need someone to ride in the back of the bus? Weren’t there enough native-born criminals, crooks, degenerates, sick sexual perverts, alcoholics, schizophrenics and child molesters about?

    Techno:
My brother’s father-in-law is a wealthy immigrant Russian who lived in Riga with my sister in law and her family. He was VERY successful under Russian rule of Latvia and maintained his business for a while after the breakup of the USSR. He was only successful because he spoke Lahtish and understood Latvian culture. He sold his business and emigrated here and is now a citizen. He was FAR from a criminal/degenerate as your ignorant statement suggests. He held an apartment and businesses in Latvia until about 2005-6. He would NOT agree with all this empire saber-rattling that Putin is doing these days, I would think.

Dave D: I will acknowledge that not all Russians are bad. However, the bad eggs are very, very bad indeed. I note that there is no “Lettish Mafiya,” at least not to my knowledge.

You don’t become as universally loathed as they are without putting in a lot of serious effort. Just about everybody on their borders, from the Finns to the Chinese, would rejoice and give thanks if Russia was squashed flat for all time by the Alien Space Bats.

@AlexInCT yar, I guess that is semantics. From what I crudely understand Russia is in its death throes, a diseased husk of a country that has dug its own grave for the past 100 years using different spades.

Putin, the tyrant, needs to play the Nationalist Card and try to divert attention away.

Now of these so called displaced ethnic Russians will do well under Russia rule. It’s sad.

A lot of Russians … like Middle Easterners… are just people who want to watch Orange is the New Black and eat a decent meal each day.

It is not their fault their country is run by tyrants and they live in a semi-police state where journalists are killed on a whim.

Russia, unlike the ME, DOES have a proud history, the Russian people have plenty of history to be proud of: especially their literature. They just need a neo-Nationalist renaissance … then again so do many European countries.

In Applebaum’s Iron Curtain, she talks about the MASSIVE ethnic cleansing the Soviets engaged in. The Crimea is a perfect example. Putin took it because it was majority Russian. But the reason it was majority Russian was because Khruschev murdered and exiled all the native tartars.

So yeah. Invade a country, put your people there, then say you have to re-invade to defend your people.

    Today Ukraine, tomorrow, Kazakhstan?

Russia wanted to be a modern country, and tried, with varying degrees of success and failure, from Peter the Great to Gorbachev. Ironically, they might have come closest to succeeding in the post-Stalin, pre-Glasnost era. (I’d like to add Russian science fiction to the literary section, which is often overlooked.)

I can’t blame Obama on this one. He’s doing exactly what he said he would from the beginning. He even got the world’s most prestigious peace prize for it. Fact is though across the pond there is a big anti- American sentiment, and as long as the fantasy land continues that the rest of the world is butterflies and fairy tales without the American’s getting in the way, Putin and others will take full advantage of that mentality and good for him.

There are a lot, sadly, of Right Wingers who are duped by Putin and it astounds me somewhat. They honestly think he’s an innocent guy just trying to look after his country…

Nah I think he’s actually quite a smart guy with an aggressive plan, and that revolves around him obtaining more power. He might give a shit about his fellow Russians, I don’t know, but I think Putin cares about Putin and whatever empire he can build first and foremost. My issue is American’s should not be taking the lead on this thing. Europe needs to step up if this is a concern for them, and if not, it’s not up to us to convince them otherwise. Per my quote from the article above, only Great Britain even sees this as a concern or is willing to accept this aggression for what it is.

Putin knows the drill, he moves forward, the American’s will say knock it off and might threaten to back it up with some military involvement, the European response will be the usual it’s somehow America’s fault for not handling it right, they sit back, do nothing, let the process repeat itself. No thanks. Europe can deal with it and come up with a solution that works for them.
