Some Good News For Once

Bet you won’t see too much of this on the evening news:

Infections with the AIDS virus have plummeted more than 50 percent among children and by a third among adults since 2001, the United Nations reports Monday in a welcome bit of good news about the pandemic.

Deaths from the fatal and incurable virus have fallen 30 percent since 2005 thanks to drugs that can help keep patients healthy, the U.N. agency UNAIDS said.

The U.N. and other health agencies now advocate quick use of pills to help keep the virus under control. Not only can they keep patients from getting sick, but they lower the risk that an infected person will infect someone else.

It works especially well in protecting newborns when their mothers are infected.

This is good news, so obviously it has to be ignored by our bad-news obsessed society. I remember in the 1980’s when hysterics were claimed that AIDS was going to be a gigantic global pandemic that would kill billions. That’s not happening because of scientific achievement and enormous generosity from wealthy countries.

Yeah, about that generosity … another reason this won’t be reported? A big contributor to the decline of AIDS was George W. Bush’s PEPFAR. I’ve had some criticisms of PEPFAR, especially its emphasis on abstinence and its anti-prostitution pledge. But when a program is conservatively estimated to have saved over a million lives and millions of new AIDS infections, you have to give credit where it’s due.

Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we’ll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian.

In a decade or two some asshole leftard will make an HBO special where Boosh orders the CIA to send a whole bunch of monkeys infected with AIDS to Africa where they would then rape all the womenz and give them more AIDS. Kind of like the nonsense shit they did about Reagan a while back saying he wanted people with AIDS to die, when he never said anything of the sort.

Look I hate having to defend Boosh, because he was way too much of a nanny stater democrat-light for my likes, doing some seriously stupid shit, but he did get a few things right on, and this was one of them. All them concerts your average lefty types think are the solution to every problem in the world – well that and more wealth redistribution, of course – do squat to help people, but the shit Boosh did for the African effort to combat AIDs was impressive. As I pointed out then, and do now, demcorats would do far worse, in anything but economy destroying politicking, and considering we now have the most lauded, capable, genius, walk-on-water, prevent-the-oceans-from-rising, more expensive vactation taking, war starting, Nobel peace prize winning, drone stiking president evah!, I think I can just say that I rest my case on his record of stupid, to be proven correct. Can you imagine ManBearPig, Frenchy Heinz-Kerry, or Billary doing anything but the same, or worse, as this community organizer & perpetual campaigner in chief? If you can’t then you are a few cards short in your deck.

Bet you won’t see too much of this on the evening news:

Except I saw a story about the UN report on the news last night (I thin I was watching NewsHour) – and your link itself is to that liberal bastion of evilness NBC. (Huffington Post also ran the story.)

I agree though, that this is one of the things that Bush got right.

    This is tricky – http://news.cnet.com/8301-11386_3-57604460-76/foot-cream-kills-hiv-by-tricking-cells-to-commit-suicide/

“A common drug that dermatologists turn to treat nail fungus appears to come with a not-so-tiny side effect: eradicating HIV.

In a study performed at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, not only does the drug Ciclopirox completely eradicate infectious HIV from cell cultures, but unlike today’s most cutting-edge antiviral treatments, the virus doesn’t bounce back when the drug is withheld. This means it may not require a lifetime of use to keep HIV at bay.

The same group of researchers had previously shown that Ciclopirox — approved by the FDA and Europe’s EMA as safe for human use to treat foot fungus — inhibits the expression of HIV genes in culture. Now they have found that it also blocks the essential function of the mitochondria, which results in the reactivation of the cell’s suicide pathway, all while sparing the healthy cells.”
