The Good Guys Win, When We Try

You remember Kiera Wilmot, the Florida student who was expelled because she was fooling around with chemicals and unintentionally created an explosion? The one who was facing criminal charges?

Great news. Not only have the authorities dropped the charges, two Crowdtilt campaigns have raised $2500 to send her and her sister to space camp and another $8000 to help with their legal expense (which have apparently been quite heavy). The school has yet to decide what to do. I would politely suggest they get her back in school, admit they were wrong and submit to a few hours in the stocks. But I’m known to be judgmental that way.

I would only expect them to double down on their position lest they appear to be falible or weak. Time to hire more administrators to develop more strategies to implementing more zero tolerance policies. Oh, and they all need a raise, too.

I am no fan of Zero Tolerance. Period.

That being said, every account of this story that I read claims that Ms Wilmot, created this chemical reaction not in the school lab, not by accident and in fact at 7:00AM, before school started. She knew there would be a small explosion, only she woefully miscalculated it’s size.

She is a smart and gifted student that had a prank get out of hand. Nothing more sinister than that. And just like David Gregory she have had her hand slapped and let to move on with her life.

The fact that you choose to portray her as an innocent victim surprises me not in the least.

Even if it was a prank, two felony charges and expulsion? Ridiculous. Especially when we have a bunch of punks in school who get away with all kinds of things when their goal in life is to amount to nothing

Which is why I suggested the proverbial “slap on the hand” and not the Rack.

A cherry bomb in the toilet got me paddled in JR High. Thankfully there was no plumbing damage, just water everywhere.
For the record, I was intrigued by the thought of a water-proof fuse.

I have to admit, I always did want to try the cherry bomb thing. Unfortunately I lacked the two main things at the time. The balls to do it, and the cherry bomb.
