Petraeus Quits: Cites Unauthorized Surge into Unknown Woman

Alright, he appears to have forgotten that he’s working for a Democratic Administration, so I don’t know why he felt that he had to resign.

I’ve seen some murmurings that there may have been something else to this. Me personally, I don’t see a lead here. He failed to follow the First Law of Having an Affair: Shut. Up. This just appears to be something a guy like Petraeus would do when he’s done something that he knows is dishonorable and is going to hurt his boss.

Sure, the timing is strange coming after the election and before the Benghazi investigation FINALLY gets some lift. But I mean, if he’s was going to resign, why in the world would he do it in a way that publicly shames himself and his family in such a way? He was a GOP favorite for 2016, not so much now. He could have taken the heat for Benghazi and STILL been a contender.

Fire off with your best conspiracy theories, but this just looks like an episode of one man’s bad judgement to me. Damn pity. I have long admired his service.

The rumor is that it’s his ghostwriter Paula Broadwell. Apparently, this came to light because of an FBI investigation into how she got access to classified e-mails.

Oh wtf, Iran shot at one of your drones a week before election, only found out a day ago.

    That’s totally not suspicious.

Paula Broadwell. < he was punching above his weight and won! Well done Petraeus! … unless his wife was stupidly hot, that is.

But well done, I would totally do Broadwell, so long as she provided me with a few gifts.

Please don’t tell be we have acquired another “poster person” who has such an open mind that his brains have fallen out. Because ‘we’ve been there done’ that already.

This administration has telegraphed it’s intentions and acted with impunity time after time yet way too many bloggers (the rest of the media is dead) ALWAYS give him/them the benefit of the doubt.

What is this “can’t be heard”-meme all about? Unless I’m missing something it’ just wrong.

Congress can subpoena witnesses, or force them to testify under oath, before its committees. This authority comes from the Constitution’s grant to Congress of “all legislative powers” (Article 1, Section 1). Witnesses are subpoenaed to provide information that will assist committees in preparing legislation. In the case of Mc-Grain v. Daugherty (1927), the Supreme Court recognized that Congress could subpoena even private citizens to testify.

Harley it’s not a rumor. I only had a secret clearance and the rig-a-marole Raytheon puts me thru every time I go back for consulting work is beyond ridicules. And after 42 years I still discuss much of what I did in the service.

Kim your link does not apply.
As cabinet appointees/ director of CIA they can be called to testify in closed door hearings. and even then some members of congress don’t have the necessary clearances (we have convicted felons like Alsee Hastings). As private citizens it must be done openly and in plain site.

I’ve been thinking about this, and the only conclusion is that your embassy was not attacked by Jihadists, but by COBRA! An international terrorist organisation determined to take over the world, who worships snakes. Clearly you were attacked by Cobra Commander, and the White House is trying to hide the fact that GI:JOE responded, as GI:JOE are a top secret rapid-response force, whose secrecy is paramount.

Damn you, MY! NOBODY implies that I’m open-minded and rational and gets away with it!

So “conspiracy theories” was probably a loaded term. I believe in a few. MLK assassination, definitely a conspiracy. UFO coverup, absolutely. I am so nuts, I even agree with the Warren Commission.

There is certainly room for speculation here, given how clamped down the Administration is on Benghazi, when it isn’t blatantly lying.

But this? What is the advantage in Petraeus resigning in this way? I don’t see it, even though any sane person (outside of the American press) can tell that there is a cover up. He could take a bullet for Obama on Benghazi and NOT disgrace himself and his family, right?

To build on that, Poosh, you can believe that the Administration is covering up some real ill shit on Benghazi without thinking that everything revolves around it.

Thousands of credible witnesses have seen UFO’s and the government denies that they saw what they saw. You can say they are covering something up WITHOUT also believing that we are allied with an evil reptilian race that craves cow genitals and is compelled to kidnap and buttplug rednecks.

Occam’s Razor should always be used.

It seems to me you WANT Petraeus to appear before the House or what not. I don’t know the details, but if he is being blocked from giving testimony then that would suggest some sort of skullduggery. If it’s merely the case that he cannot be “forced” to appear, then surely he would happily appear? Given his background. Evidence of him being blocked from giving testimony would be evidence of attempted cover-up.

  14. Thrill says:

He can go testify and still participate in a cover up. Holder did over F&F.

Occam’s Razor is giving me the conclusion that he is resigning because he sent the private to the wrong foxhole but I am interested in knowing more about the classified information he supposedly compromised through the affair, if true.

  15. Thrill says:

So if Petraeus resigning is part of the cover up, why exactly would some Republicans have thought about demanding his resignation just a couple of weeks ago?

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/petraeus-s-sudden-resignation_662200.html

Other members of Congress were particularly interested in questioning Petraeus about why crucial details about those attacks were left out of “talking points” the CIA prepared for lawmakers and executive branch officials. Among those details: the existence of a communications intercept between two al Qaeda-linked terrorists discussing the attacks. The level of frustration with the CIA and Petraeus had led several top Republican lawmakers to consider calling for his resignation in late October.

Obama has already been re-elected. Clinton took responsibility for the security failure but still has a job and her 2016 prospects. The scandal is going to hit the Administration as predicted now, but so what?

They’ll cover their asses, the media will continue helping them do it, the American people won’t know or care about it, some jihadist assholes will get killed with a Hellfire in retaliation, and nothing will come of it. All I really see it doing is causing yet another fight between Congress and the White House but what does anyone really expect to come of this beyond grandstanding?

It’s more proof of how broken Washington is, but do you really expect anyone to get impeached or jailed for this? Given the ultimate meaninglessness of it all, so what if Petraeus resigned?

This story hits a little bit too close to home for me, but the timing and the fact that Petreaus now doesn’t have to testify, and worse, because of loss of clearance, can not talk at all, smacks of more of the same as the recent firings of tow of the heads for the US military force commands responsible for the area where Libya falls under. There is somethign seriously rotten going on here, and they are covering it up. If Obama had an (R) next to his name the members of the LSM would be ming him do the Nixon danceof shame right now.

Petraeus, its bloody convinat,if he cant testify, you think the administration wanting to show nothing bad was going on woudl ask him to hold off and DIRECT the FBI to wait a while longer…. wait, why did they wait THIS long?

    Something about this does stink….

  20. Mississippi Yankee says:

So if Petraeus resigning is part of the cover up, why exactly would some Republicans have thought about demanding his resignation just a couple of weeks ago?

This affair has been known to, and has been investigated by the FBI for several months. But Leon Panetta was not going to let this information come to light before his boss’s election.

Both Petraeus and Panetta were (R) on paper yet chose to work in an anti (R) administration although in the Generals case, as a professional military man he was thought to be more objective and less partisian. Panetta.imo, is just a worm.

As Patraeus’ actions have shown us his is more human and perhaps less ideologically pure than you would paint him.

And ‘Her Fithiness’ didn’t “take the blame” for Benghazi. It was nothing more than a very minor Mea culpa AND her first campaign speech for 2016.

Eric Holder’s resignation is to cover his own racist ass as the Fast and Furious facts are still coming to light. Now the big question is where will the new AG Napalitano’s Waco occur?

  21. Hal_10000 says:

I think the conspiracy theories are a bit premature given that we are only 12 hours in. I seriously doubt that Petraeus will not testify before Congress. The Republicans would scream blue murder if that happened. It may happen in a closed door session, but I have little doubt that it will happen at some point. If resigning got people out of revealing potentially damaging information, no investigation would EVER work.

  22. Thrill says:

And ‘Her Fithiness’ didn’t “take the blame” for Benghazi.

That’s not what I said. She did take responsibility for the security of the consulate, but not the blame for the entire debacle. I agree with you that Benghazi hasn’t hurt her political prospects at all. But that’s why I don’t think Petraeus resigning now has anything to do with fears of testifying.

I did say in the post that the timing of all this is suspect and if it’s true that the FBI knew of a security risk like this for months and the Administration deliberately waited until after the election for political reasons, then we got us a new scandal. Like it matters.

It really is moot isn’t it? Either Petraeus will testify or not. If he doesn’t, then you can start, correctly, thinking something is a bit odd here (seeing as I see Petraeus as someone who would refuse to take part is games or coverups).

The timing is a little odd though, purely because if he had eh retired just prior to the election it would bring up musings about Libya again near the surface of the media, which would, like a dead ambassador, not be optimal.

+ I really think Hilary Clinton is toast now, thanks to Obama. She won’t be able to distance herself from the next four years of clusterf*cking – and Obama has framed her as a poodle, quite frankly (imo).

More on whether or not Petraeus will have to testify (short version: yes)

“I don’t see how in the world you can find out what happened in Benghazi before, during and after the attack if Gen. Petraeus doesn’t testify,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

One former senior congressional staffer, who asked for anonymity because of the sensitivity of current employers, told The Washington Times that Mr. Petraeus would be “duty-bound” to testify, even as a private citizen.

“He is still subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. He could be asked to testify as a former senior official, and if he refuses — which I don’t think he would — he could be subpoenaed,” said the staffer, who is the director of a House subcommittee.
