Politics Makes You Stupid: First Time

I’m not OFFENDED! by this ad. I just think it’s really really dumb. And it really really gets at everything that can drive you nuts about the Cult of Obama. I defy any thinking person to watch and not want to puke into a trash can by the end.

My first time voting, incidentally, was 1990. I think I voted for John Linder for Congress. He lost to Ben Jones because Pat Swindall had left such a foul taste in people’s mouths and Jones was a conservative Democrat (and also Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard). I also voted for one of the few Democrats I’ve ever supported — Senator Sam Nunn, who was very conservative and would probably be a Republican today. Nunn may even have been running unopposed in 1990. Two years later, I voted a straight Republican ticket in Bush’s I unsuccessful re-election bid.

I didn’t feel “empowered” or “special” or anything. It was just something I did. Politics was not something new and exciting when I was 18. The first election I get intensely interested in was 1984 when I watched Reagan absolutely destroy Mondale. But Nunn, Linder and Bush were very good politicians to cut your teeth on. There was no cult about them, no flash and celebrity. All three were plain, competent men who executed their offices in a very straight-forward business-like way. I can’t imagine anyone going faint and blushing over them like in the above video. And that’s the way it should be.

At the risk of making some of our readers feel old (including me), do you remember your first election?

Sorry but I just have to say it. I think this young lady would me much happier voting for an ‘innie’ than an ‘outie’…
not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Also last nite I linked to this YouTube clip and also to a virgin Putin voter. At least that one was funny.

I was just listening to Rush musing about this this afternoon, and he posed the obvious question: Is this what the feminazis were burning their bras for, so that younger generations of women could be depicted as sex objects by their liberal rock star demigod heroes (and/or their handlers)? Ads like this should piss off any self-respecting woman, and absolutely would rattle the feminists if it were for a Republican candidate…

I believe the political cartoon Day by Day captures the same thought you have in your comment but with a redhead.

LOL! Even as a cartoon, that redhead is a helluva lot purdier than I ever was…

It has occurred to me that the insipid phrase, “lead from behind” is a perfect example of classic Orwellian doublethink, easily on par with ‘was is peace” and “freedom is slavery”.

The dems want to enslave women by making them dependent on government (Julia). Thus removing all possible chances ever, to get a shot at real power. They are doing the same to latinos and blacks. You’d have to be blind not to see it.

This is so hilariously phrased (in the insane way), it really must be a literal quote from that Rush guy. Also: yes – they did it so it would no longer be up to old farts to decide when a woman is not behaving all properly lady-like.

You see a cult of Obama that you have a problem with, fine, granted. We can probably agree. But more than Obama, that is American politics today. Obama is not the only one who has passionate devotees (Sarah Palin, anyone?) His just more successful at it than everyone else.

But other than that, this is a harmless, charming little well-produced ad. You could claim it is sexist, but only if you’re really into high-concept feminist theory (I know, everyone here).

Is this what the feminazis were burning their bras for, so that younger generations of women could be depicted as sex objects

This is so hilariously phrased (in the insane way)…

Perhaps it appears “hilariously insane” to you because of your own intellectual dishonesty in quoting only part of what I said, and conspicuously leaving out the “by liberals” part. By misquoting me, you effectively change my specific observational query into a banal generalization that means nothing.

What I actually said was (emphasis added):

Is this what the feminazis were burning their bras for, so that younger generations of women could be depicted as sex objects by their liberal rock star demigod heroes (and/or their handlers)?

…they did it so it would no longer be up to old farts to decide when a woman is not behaving all properly lady-like…

Umm, got news for you, anybody is free to determine for themselves whether someone is being a gentleman or being ladylike — no one needs a hord of liberal do-gooders to do their thinking for them (except, apparently, other liberals). But this is a complete non sequitur anyway, since no one is accusing anyone of not being “lady-like”. Thus far, you are the only person in this thread to even use the term.

But thanks for helping to illustrate the flagrant double-standard we have all come to know — it’s okay when liberals depict women as sex objects, but not when conservatives do so. When conservatives do this, it’s proof of what evil and vile “old farts” they are. When liberals do it, it’s still somehow “liberating” for women (“it would no longer be up to old farts to decide when a woman is not behaving all properly lady-like”), but otherwise “harmless”, even “charming”.

To repeat: When liberals depict women as sex objects, it’s “liberating” and “charming”.

I’m trying to figure it out.

Nope, what you’re doing is known as “baiting”.

Think about it — when a given group of people (call them Group A) is doing something that another group (call them Group B) honestly believes to be against the best interests of the first group (Group A), then any explanation that Group B might come up with is unlikely to be very flattering to Group A. That is just an unfortunate fact of life (of which you are probably already aware). Given this, if any member of Group B tries to offer a good-faith explanation of Group A’s behavior, all you would need to do is recognize that the explanation is not very flattering to Group A at some level, giving you (in your mind, anyway) license to scream “RACIST!!!” or “MISOGYNIST!!!” at the member of Group B trying to propose a sincere explanation.

In my ever-so-humble experience in dealing with liberals, name-calling seems to come very easy for them. Serious thought and reflection? Not so much, by all appearances.

Right, it’s going to come across as patronising and arrogant.

I’m looking for the “good-faith explanation”, because (even though I’ve been sarcastic) I’m assuming that the members of Group B aren’t actually racists or misogynists. Believe it or not, I assume individuals aren’t those things unless they demonstrate clearly that they are. Which is why I’m assuming there must be good faith explanations that I haven’t considered.

In my ever-so-humble experience in dealing with liberals, name-calling seems to come very easy for them. Serious thought and reflection? Not so much, by all appearances.

Yes, some of the comments were intended to get some sort of reaction. Any would be good. Previous experience demonstrates that a simple question just gets ignored. At least this way there is a chance of turning into something like a discussion. Granted, a low chance, but better than zero percent.

You may not believe this, but I strongly resist labelling people as ‘racist’ or ‘misogynist’ or similar because they are strong and serious accusations that require (what I would consider) a high standard of evidence. I don’t see why discussions with people I personally don’t know on the internet should be any different. I also don’t tend to go around claiming fraud and conspiracy willy-nilly when I find information that doesn’t suit me.

Anyway, if you have anything to assist, I would be geniunely grateful.

Depends on what you mean by “being serious”. If you mean she doesn’t really think voting for Obama is like having sex with him – no shit, sherlock. Upset over Whedon, his tv shows SCREAM rightwing/libertarian. Sadly, I think, because he is surrounded by liberals and those sorts, he can’t really find the space to collect his thoughts. I mean Captain Mal uttered the words “governments are there to get in your way” ffs. The entire plot of Serenity is an anti-liberal theme.

I think we should feel sorry for Whedon and hope that in ten years time he’ll come over the right side of politics. Serenity is one of the only right wing movies with probably 300 to be released in the past decade.

How does that translate into “can’t really find the space to collect his thoughts”?

In July 2012, at the San Diego Comic-Con International, in response to one woman who noted the anti-corporate themes in many of his movies, and asked him to give his economic philosophy in 30 seconds or less, Whedon spoke out against both the socialist idealism he was brought up listening to and modern capitalism as well, stating that “ultimately all these systems don’t work”. While he goes on to imply that he does not believe in either and that the best system has yet to be thought out, he also implies that he sympathizes with what the Democrats are trying to do with regard to the social structures in America.

Endorsing Barack Obama in the 2012 United States presidential election, Whedon—-in a satirical manner—-equated Mitt Romney’s future as president with a zombie apocalypse, “Romney is ready to make the deep rollbacks in health care, education, social services, reproductive rights, that will guarantee poverty, unemployment, overpopulation, disease, rioting; all crucial elements in creating a nightmare zombie wasteland”.
