The Dirty Truth

It’s about damn time. I was not going to write a post on that contemptible mope from Nevada, the little gollum who got his marching orders from the WH to go on character assassination detail, but finally somebody has the onions to call a spade a spade:

The odd thing (OK, maybe for the dems, not so odd) was that the original story was so deliciously preposterous, so left field, so ,”Are you freakin’ insane?” that logic would assume he would see how stupid he looks hatching a clearly ridiculous story, then go crawl back under his rock, and rest up to fight another day. But remarkably he has doubled down on the stupid and continued to wring that shammy:

Happy Wednesday and welcome to August. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he’s been told by a Bain Capitol investor that the reason Mitt Romney won’t release his tax returns is that Romney didn’t pay taxes for a decade:
-> “He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” Reid told the Huffington Post in an interview. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look? … You guys have said his wealth is $250 million. Not a chance in the world. It’s a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don’t pay taxes for 10 years when you’re making millions and millions of dollars.”

I want Romney’s tax accountant, that guy knows his stuff. Beyond the obvious; a rich guy who’s life is going well is going to risk it all/risk going to jail to avoid paying taxes, a guy who’s political aspirations were evident since he could spell “JOB”, is going to throw all that away. This is just crazy, what’s next, claims from employees from 30 years ago that he got frisky with them?

The other oddity is that investors are not privy to and, or can access tax records of those money managers that invest their money, that is not part of the fund prospectus, so any claims of knowledge in this area falls squarely under the umbrella of “dirty liar”.

Because there is no sense of fair play, no even playing field, no level of scrutiny for both sides, the MSM will not shine light on this pile of manure, someone else needs to. It takes zero imagination to consider the reaction if Mitch McConnell had made similar claims about BHO in August of 2008, “get a rope” would have been the tamest reaction.

Yes, i’m glad that the RNC chairman called Reid out as a dirty liar, but can we have someone a bit higher on the food chain demonstrate similar conviction? We pretty much knew that Obama did not like Romney, now we know for sure, but I don’t want Romney doing his best McCain impression of “Well, gosh darn, no need to get personal, I’m sure he is a fine man so I will just focus on my abilities and let sleeping dogs lie”. It is time to wake up those dogs, time to start wrestling them pigs.

Obama has said some outrageous stuff over the last few months, go after him, he is going after you.

Even Jon Stewart called him out hilariously. It’s just ridiculous. The defining aspect of Romney is his desire for public office and he has kept himself squeaky clean.

‘my side’ is getting far too similar to the birthers for my liking…

Having said that – I think this is a fairly asute political move* – with Reid falling on his sword somewhat for the good of the Democrat campaign. And this is why:

Aside from whether or not Reid is lying, or whatever – what does Romney do now? If he does release his tax records, then he’s weak because he’s been bullied into it. And any way – it looks like he doesn’t want to release them anyway, so in some ways he will be being bullied into it.

But then if he doesn’t release his returns, then the story will run and run. Tax returns will be the talking point, rather than the economy. With every ‘win’ Romney has, there will be the “yeah, but what’s he hiding in his tax returns” question hanging around in the background. With every Obama gaffe, it is relatively easy to hijack the news cycle with some ‘anonymous tipster’ speculating on why Romney won’t release his returns.

One of the rules of thumb in political communications is to beware the vacuum. If there is a lack of information, then the public can fill the void with their own worst case scenarios (it’ll rarely be a rational explanation, our brains search out the scandals) – it’s why most political ads are in the form of a statement then a question.

The Democrats have taken that information vacuum, and exposed it, without Obama having to get involved. And every question Romney answers about his taxes, is time in the news cycle he’s not spending convincing voters.

The likely reason that Romney isn’t releasing his tax records, is that he’s used good accountants. I.e., he’s paid enough taxes, but probably not more. That apparently, is bad in America.

This attack was truly ridiculous, though. And we’we got three more months of it. :)

Reid is a lying dipshit – perhaps this will finally get him sidelined for good, where he should have been all along….

Indeed. Romney is going to have to continue playing defense on this issue if he doesn’t release the returns. He can’t really win playing defence. Based on current polling he’s going to have a hard enough time as it is. He’s going to get the point relatively soon where he needs a game-changer event.
The longer he spends not releasing it, the more it appears that it’s not just on principle.

Why are tax returns so important? The current treasury secretary could not have been bothered to pay taxes and now he is in charge of them?

Unfortunately somehow they became important for presidential candidates to release. Not sure why, hell I do not even give a rats ass about them. Just when did this become so important? Oh wait, an (R) is running against a (D).

FPrefect – that’s part of the problem – the guy that made them important…. Romney Senior in 1968.

If you want an information vacuum,. Obama’s entire past qualifies as one. Or a work of fiction, take your pick…

It can’t be both – that’s the point. A fiction (as long as you’re not shown to be lying and if you are that people care) is fine – it’s the lack of an answer that’s damaging. The best I can think of are the college papers – exactly what was it that Obama was advocating in those college papers? I mean I’m not saying that he was outlining an attack on the US through secret code – but without seeing them for myself I’ll have to take the president at his word.

    It’s an old political trick

It makes no sense to me. Romney has his 2010 taxes up on the election site, plus the estimates of 2011. Of course now there is the “taxers” which are acting just as bad a the “birthers”. Both are equally bad.

Meh, no wonder why I am so disinterested in politics.

Fiction, by definition, is just making shit up – when presented as the truth it is a lie.

It’s the same thing as just not saying anything in such case.

I saw a potential way for Romney to go. He should challenge Obama and say “The president and his allies think full disclosure is important. I’ll release my lat fice years of tax returns when Obama releases all his academic records.”

I saw a piece, pure speculation of course, that Obama enrolled as an undergraduate as a foreign exchange student from Indonesia (written by a fellow Columbia alum-interesting that when a survey was taken of 400 Columbia students who attended at the same time as Obama that not a single one recalled him being there). There, now it is up to the president to prove this wrong.

I was that one too. given what we know publicly and what he is known to have lied about, it would not surprises me that that is the case, which is something i speculated about some time ago. THAT is the real scandal.. oh well maybe the subject of some of his papers too, and what he said in them.
