Somalia Raid

From the file full of things that make you say, “America … Fuck Yeah!”

U.S. Special Operations Forces stormed an outdoor encampment in Somalia early Wednesday, rescuing a kidnapped American aid worker and her Danish colleague and killing nine men who held them captive, officials said.

The Pentagon later confirmed reports that the rescue was carried out by the same Navy SEAL unit that found and killed Osama bin Laden — the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, also known as SEAL Team 6.

Are SEAL Team 6 running for President? I did get that impression last night. Would certainly vote for them over what’s-is-face and whozits.

It goes without saying that there is no other country in the world that can get anyone anywhere and get out before the echoes die.

Took em years to finally get Bin Laden, and I want to claim that these Somalis couldn’t have been all that well trained, armed or fed to begin with

“The United States will not tolerate the abduction of our people and will spare no effort to secure the safety of our citizens and to bring their captors to justice,” Obama said in a statement.

Ergo without a warrant or okay from Somalia. And, killing these pirates is “justice” ? Nevertheless

Somalia’s government applauded the mission and said it welcomed any operation against pirates

    Somalias pretty lawless

SEALs said a confluence of factors, from the health of the hostages to the available intelligence and operational conditions, gave Obama a window of opportunity to act and prompted Washington to move ahead with the raid.

In other words, a GPS provided him their whereabouts, etc.

Hopefully you’re sharp enough to see the obvious conflict of your words here.

I said it looks Obama invaded Somalia without their permission, but they okayed it after the deed. Obama gives a crap about Somalias sovereignity, acting like a cowboy, cooing “whatever it takes” but Somalia doesn’t really care that others do on their sovereign soil.
Imagine the complete and total shit fit Americans would have if Mexicans staged a raid on drug dealers stateside, to “fight our shared war on drugs” “FU wetbck $##$%#$ It all your fault, you grow it. Go home and kill your dealers you $#$#$#”

I like the story but I can’t help thinking if you’re going to get kidnapped in a foreign country you’d better do it this year. Seal Team 6 is, for now, one of the only campaign tools Obama has. He’ll use them as often as he can until the election is over. After that, you’re on your own.

Piracy was almost non-existent during the last century because the usual punishment for piracy, to kill them and kill them swiftly for that act, had worked so well as a deterrent that nobody wanted to take the risk. Piracy has been on the rise in the last 2 decades because people like you think it is unjust to kill them for committing acts of piracy these days. Of course, I am sure now you will tell me that any justice that results in death is not really justice, maybe even unjust, or that the death penalty isn’t really a deterrent, but it will be bullshit.

Some people need killing that’s a fact.

    Somalia has a government?

I was wondering about that. It must be at least 6 hours since some liberal hit me with the “Why don’t you move to Somalia! That’s a libertarian paradise!” bullshit.

Piracy became unprofitable because advances in technology made it harder to do. Pirates didn’t typically murder pirated ships’ crews, they stole their goods, which means the death penalty in international waters cuz folks can get away with it, so they kill. It can be profitable.

Ironically piracy is on the rise because technology now makes it easier again. Theres better pricier stuff to steal and folks are more desperate again

What theyre saying is that, left to their own devices, without all this intrusive government bullshit, the US would still be the Wild West, men shooting all and any buffalo in the way of their 4x4s at their will, keeping terrorist redskins at bay. and the ones on reservations STFU, etc. Much like Somalia is today.

This is one of my biggest pet peeve with idiots both on the right and the left. The left likes to pretend that anyone that is into smaller government really wants no government. Some people on the right also live by this misconception about libertarians. Wanting smaller government is not a call for anarchy and a lawless society: it is the opposite of that. It is the pursuit of a society where freedoms and justice are valued more than some smattering state provided benefits that create the illusion of welfare at the expense of your freedoms. Sure some libertarians might be anarchists, but so are most fucking hippies, and they are hard core leftists.

That is such bullshit that in addition to being laughable it makes me question your ability to reason. What technology did was make it harder for pirates to pull off acts of piracy and live. When a modern warship could chase down any pirate ship and pirates where then hung, piracy kind of lost its ability to provide quick riches.

Pirates didn’t typically murder pirated ships’ crews, they stole their goods, which means the death penalty in international waters cuz folks can get away with it, so they kill. It can be profitable.

I am sure most ships that where being accosted could fought back if they had the means, meaning people died, and usually the pirates did the killing. Or is your contention that ship captains behaved like the idiot serfs in Europe or like ship crews do these days, where they surrender to the whim of the criminal/pirate/assailant, and hope they live to file a complaint nobody cares to do much about? If that was the case then piracy would have been strong and alive considering how lucrative it would be to keep doing that sort of stuff. BTW, in the age of piracy, when ships still often moved by the power of the sail, being left without food or water or, a broken steam engine you could not repair was a death sentence. Maybe your point is that pirates sometimes didn’t kill valuable commodities they could sell as slaves, use as your sea bitches, or ransom? Some people might prefer to be slaves or used as sex toys than go down fighting, but they tend to not be the ones that put an end to the days of piracy.

Ironically piracy is on the rise because technology now makes it easier again. Theres better pricier stuff to steal and folks are more desperate again.

Oh bullshit. Next you are going to tell me that the reason criminals steal today is that there is more stuff to steal and technology makes it easier to steal too? Fucking idiotic. Piracy is on the rise because pirates no longer fear for their lives, making the risk vs. the rewards worth committing acts of piracy. I guarantee you that if we told pirates that tomorrow we would hold summary trails at sea and hang every one of them when we caught them, and actually did just that, that piracy would all but return to being inconsequential and non existent in the span of a year.

kidnapped American aid worker and her Danish colleague

Were surw to be sold as slaves sea bitches, or ransom. Aye, American women make the best slaves. Just to have one is considered a manly thing in Somalia.
So how does the pirate go about extracting ransom, who does he call to make demands, and with what technology?

They also must make for good ransom if they took them. And in a part of the world where status is measured in cows and number of wives, a nice looking blond American is some serious status builder. Your humor fails.

So how does the pirate go about extracting ransom, who does he call to make demands, and with what technology?

Was this another failed attempt at humor? Notice the “failed” point.

You do know that what these pirates do, especially those we are discussing in this post on Somalia, is grab ships with valuable cargo and crew, take them into port, and then demand ransom to the tune of several millions, for their return? They usually don’t bother to call anyone. When your tanker carrying half a million barrels of oil gets nabbed, I am sure you go find whomever has it and try to get it back. That is one of the pirate’s favorite money making strategies. Google “Somali pirates and oil tankers” for numerous examples. And it is not limited to tankers, although most want one of those because the money they can demand for those is far higher than what they can ask for a sailboat they took into port with a few rich stupid people on it that didn’t know better than to avoid this part of the world.

BTW, they are not looting the ships of goods then sailing of to have a party, but that seems to be what you want everyone to believe these pirates are doing so you can argue killing them is just too harsh.
