Site stuff: Comment formatting

I’ve been seeing a lot of discussion in various places about comments, basically nested versus chronological style. I used to think nested was the only way to go, but it has created a number of weird problems on this site…so, a query:

Do you prefer the current nested style, or would you prefer a simple chronological style like we had at the old place? I’m totally willing to change it to chrono if more people prefer it.

Nested is great in theory for assisting in keeping track of who is responding to whom, but often you end up with the whole side-scrunchy thread of conversation all the way down, and after a certain number of responses it stops indenting and becomes de facto chronological format anyways for that particular exchange.

Thunderdome becomes… Thunderpipe. Which is cool, too, if you’re into that sort of thing.

I much prefer chronological. People can quote what they’re responding to so there should never be a problem keeping track.

    This, offered in chronological order…

Nested comments worked pretty well until a duel breaks out or a post becomes ginormous. At that point a map was required to find your place.

For different reasons I like em both. Fickled me.

Well I never thought I’d use this word in response to one of your posts:

    Exactly

For a while I was going to argue for keeping the current format – on the basis that everyone would then naturally rally against me and it would immediately be changed. ;-)

I prefer chronological. With the nested comments, there are sometimes several arguments going on simultaneously and it’s difficult to keep up.

I’m on the fence. I much prefer nested most of the time, but people are right in that multiple threads and the “mashed on the right” stuff is hard to follow too.

I could live with chronological as long as people are good with quoting on replies.

Chronological does make it a lot easier to come back to a post later and pick up where you left off, that’s for sure.

I’m a big fan of chronological, though I don’t post much here so not sure if my vote should carry as much weight as regulars.
Then again, part of the reason I don’t post more is my trouble keeping track of comments in the nested format (I never claimed to be sharp).

id prefer the chronological order, simply so i can keep beer track of whats going on. and maybe i would post a few more of my irreverent comments.

Obviously, this means that chronological is a communist plot, and we must therefore keep using the nested format.

I vote chronological. With the emphasis, please, on logical.

Four syllables good, two syllables bad (although later we can change ‘bad’ to ‘better’ as we gradually descend back into anti-intellectual cavemen).

We’ve finally managed to have the ‘everyone agree’ thread. I don’t post very often because of the difficulty of keeping tabs on who said what to who. Make it chronological…with beer track.

So far users can’t. I haven’t really researched a way to make sure that images are resized to fit the template, so allowing people to post then generally ends up breaking the site. Best bet is to use a place like imgur.com and link ‘em.

BS (Czar) was ridiculing my apparent ineptitude when I was trying to post one previously. The bastard. That makes much more sense.

Commielogical it is. I’ll work on an auto-quote reply thingy to assist in quoting. Should be a simple plugin somewhere to do it.

If you should happen by the “Government Run Health Genius” post (where CM becomes extremely verbose) you might notice Tripper makes several excellent points in two or more comments. Replying to his comments, although not impossible, becomes confusing when pages long comments are in the mix.

I might suggest cutting two or three of CM’s fingers off but I’m not sure how his government run insurance would handle this correction.

All kidding aside JimK,thanks for all that you do for us!
