Syrian Assault

Hmmm:

Several loyalists of President Bashar al-Assad broke into the U.S. embassy in Damascus on Monday and security guards used live ammunition to prevent hundreds from storming the French embassy, diplomats said.

They said the attackers tore down U.S. embassy plaques and tried to break security glass in protests fueled by the government against a visit by U.S. and French ambassadors to the city of Hama, focus of demonstrations against Assad’s rule.

“Four buses full of shabbiha (Alawite militia loyal to Assad) came from Tartous. They used a battering ram to try to break into the main door,” a resident of Afif, the old district where the U.S. embassy is located told Reuters by telephone.

The US is “condemning” the Syrian government, which strikes me as ridiculously weak tea. This could have ended up in a hostage situation. Pull the entire embassy staff out and tell the Syrians we will not return until they, at minimum, stop massacring thousands of their own people.

Holy shit, the French were tougher than we were? They used “live ammunition” to resist the attack. What did we do? The US embassy is US territory. This was an act of war. We would have been within out rights (and that precious international law) to have slaughtered any and all of the mob that invaded our embassy. A few shots in the air likely would have done the job, however.

Pull the entire embassy staff out and tell the Syrians we will not return until they, at minimum, stop massacring thousands of their own people.

Oh no that would be admitting that Obama was wrong to send an ambassador in the first place. It would interfere with the general plan of cozying up to the regines that hate us and screwing over and insulting our allies. Can’t have that.

    I wonder how much a rent-a-mob costs in Syria…

Nothing, just shoot them if they don’t appear as scheduled.

This is proof that we have lost it. Assad figured he could attack the US embassy, to gin up support amongst the crowd that up until recently actually let their indoctrination and hate for us cloud their judgment so they couldn’t see the problem was with themselves, and the inept morons in the WH, stretched thin fighting for Euro oil or interests, would cave, and he won. It’s the Iranian hostage crisis all over? Is Obama trying to outdo Carter at the weak and stupid? Inquiring minds want to know!

We should tell Assad we are gunning for his ass unless his goons back off, and do it if he doesn’t comply. Instead I guarantee you we will act like cowarly tools, and this will go south quick. Don’t worry Jimmy! Obama is giving you a run for your money…

They haven’t killed anyone until the UN says they have, and then they can bomb with us funding it of course, and providing most of the equipment, and manpower. The UN has a new moral compass you know. and always with the best intentions.

Seems more like Assad sent his people into the embassy HOPING we would shoot them. That would be easy for him to spin into a “slaughter” by Americans and try to generate support amongst those who are otherwise against him. Just my feeling.

I was thinking the same thing. In this case, a couple of flashbangs followed by a drink from the firehose would have been effective and funny.

Am I the only one here having a hard time swallowing the outlined rationale? He’s supposedly ordered the attack (1) hoping it would gin up support amongst the crowd, and (2) hoping that the international community would do nothing about it? Those are two big effin’ hopes. Personally, I don’t think it makes sense.

This shit happens all the time, Kimpost. That “International Community” of yours seems to only want to fight when it hits their pockets, as action in Libya, which is why they have so far not taken any action in Syria, where much of the same was going on, demonstrates.

And tyrannical dictators don’t particularly much care for logic. It’s a given that killing Jews and/or Americans trumps any sanity with these people. They have used these kinds of ridiculous excuses – where they blame America or Israel for everything that is wrong, or goes wrong, or that is done by the government, to keep the population in check – for more than 50 years now, and done so very effectively. In the mean time these vile and totally dysfunctional autocrats keep their power safe.

So yeah, it is not too farfetched for Assad to think that attacking an American asset might suddenly divert the anger of his people – an anger he has not been able to stop with just brutal force – away from him. Doubly so if that “International Community” of your suddenly says or does anything of substance. Any action can immediately be claimed to be an attack on Syrian sovereignty and the Syrian people, and I see no reason megalomaniacs like Assad would figure this wouldn’t serve his purpose at this time.

Personally, I don’t think it makes sense.

That might be because of your lack of experience with these autocrats and how they think. The end justifies the means. Look at how Saddam remained defiant, even as it became clear that his Russian and French buddies in the UN could not deter Bush from taking action unless Saddam backed down, while he could have defused everything by complying. He literally put his neck on the chopping block because weakness would have put his hold on power in jeopardy. Assad is doing much the same. If he doesn’t distract this people and kills this revolution, he is going to be in shit anyway.
