In 2001, acting on the tip of a racist drug addict, police in Prentiss Mississippi executed a midnight raid in the wrong home. Inside was a man named Cory Maye with his 16 month-old daughter. Waking up to the sound of the door being smashed in, he grabbed a revolver and fired at the intruders. He realized moments later that they were cops. And minutes later, officer Ron Jones was dead. Maye’s trial was a travesty, involving key testimony from a now-disgraced “medical examiner”. He was sentenced to death.
In 2006, Radley Balko — one of the evil selfish libertarians who only care about themselves and people who are like them — took up the cause. His efforts first got Maye off death row. And today, they got him out of prison with a plea to manslaughter and a sentence of time served. Within a few days, he will be a free man and holding his daughter, now 11.
I post this story not only because it’s a great way to start Independence Day weekend, but as a middle finger to all the Stephen Metcalfs and John Coles of the world. He’s too modest to claim it, but it’s very possible that without Radley Balko, Core Maye would be moving closer and closer to being executed. That’s the good that one evil selfiish libertarian can do. I wonder how many men the snide anti-libertarians have gotten off of death row and into the arms of their daughters?
