Edwards Indicted

It’s going to take an awful lot of channelling of cerebral palsy victims to get out of this one:

Former Democratic vice presidential nominee and two-time presidential candidate John Edwards pleaded not guilty Friday to conspiracy and campaign law violations, acknowledging that he had “done wrong,” but denying that he broke the law.

His plea came hours after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts, including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws.

“There’s no question that I’ve done wrong,” Edwards told reporters outside federal court in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “But I did not break the law and I never, ever thought I was breaking the law.”

He was released on his own recognizance, but was ordered to surrender his passport and remain within the lower 48 states.

If convicted on all counts, Edwards would face up to 30 years in prison and a maximum fine of $1.5 million.

I have not follow the case closely enough to know how this will go down once it gets to a courtroom. As much as I despise Edwards, it does seem a bit of a reach to claim that supporters paying off his mistress constituted improper campaign contributions. But the weight of precedent and the grand jury seem to indicate that Edwards’ goose is cooked.

The sad thing is, there are people who would’ve preferred him over Bush. He’s a classic hypocrite limousine liberal, and I won’t be sorry to see him go. I only hope that his pretty ass spends at least a little time in jail so he learns just how it feels to get good and fucked.

“I’ve done wrong, but I did not break the law.”

… Riiiiight. This is basically admitting guilt but pleading Not Guilty.

Kind of like how when Tookie Williams was whimpering to Schwarzenegger for a pardon:

Tookie: “Please! Commute me to life in prison! I’m remorseful!”

Arnie: “So yowah admitting you did eht?”

Tookie: “No! Fuck man, I’m innocent, I was framed by those pigs!”

Arnie: “Then howw kahn you be remorsefahl? Fry heem.”

Edwards is trying to say the “make it go away” words that Democrats have repeated ad infinitum since Clinton: “I did wrong”. They think if they just admit a vague general wrongdoing, it just entitles them to skip along doing whatever. Edwards doesn’t know how to change the script now that the magic words didn’t work as a Get Out Of Indictment Free like usual, so he’s just continuing to read from it even as he has to contradict what he’s reading in the next sentence.

He should know better. He’s a lawyer. I love how he couldn’t possibly need more money, but wouldn’t take a plea deal because “a felony plea would probably require giving up his law license.” I sure as hell hope it would. They better take it away before Obama appoints him as a federal judge.

He was referring to his extramarital affair, not the legal charges. He has not admitted any guilt regarding the legal charges, has he?

Considering the “I did wrong” defense counts on vaguery, it’s difficult to say what he’s admitted.

If that’s what he’s saying, tho, he’s just Clintoning a different way.
